VCR being replaced by PVR - Should an invention be created for sheer profit and at the expense of the consumer? Of course not, but Rogers Cable is doing just that by designing their digital cable boxes to be incompatible with VCRs (i.e. you can only use them to play tapes, but you can't record anything). Rogers did this to force their consumers to buy their expensive $600 PVR digital cable boxes (Personal Video Recorders). Do you own a PVR?

Indeed, he's upset that they're calling it Scarlet, and it's certainly true that any long-time readers of the mag may see that first "Scarl"... and think, oh, it's Scarlet Street.... when actually it's a new mag (for all that it's worked on by the same people as Scarlet Street, except for the publisher/editor who founded it.) What's even funnier, 2 of the 3 guys who are the publishing/editing triumverate - who post about this on a certain messageboard - have said that they don't care for the name - they just couldn't think of anything better! I could think of dozens of better names.... Scarlet Screen, Scarlet Scream, Frankly Scarlet, and so on... Frankly, I don't hold out much hope for the mag...
Re: Do bigger monitors save time? - Hi Kevin, Thanks for the welcome! I would agree that two 17's would work well but really, any size would work. I'd be careful in going after the larger monitors that are traditional heights but are really wide, unless you have the desk space for it. Choose your monitors carefully as well to ensure that you try to find ones that have a small frame outside of the actual monitor screen. That way, when you put them together, the screens look a little more uniform. Last tip for either multiple monitors or one large one... Speed your mouse motion up. If you don't, you'll spend forever scrolling from one screen to another or across a larger screen. It'll take a bit to get used to at first but after a few days, using a mouse with regular motion will seem painstakingly slow!
Frumpy or sleek? The wrong face drives away customers - I've got a Discovery News Feed on my Google Desktop, and every morning I usually click on one or two headlines. The first time I do this, I'm always brought to a "splash page" or "ad page" or whatever it's called, in which a frumpy woman (middle aged, bad hair cut - or just on a bad hair day, pinny over her dress, clutching a few papers and smiling) is juxtaposed over some ad about the dangers of high cholesterol and what to do about it. Now, I am a feminist, and I see no reason why middle aged women should have to primp and preen and watch their weight (any more than younger women should) and that these women can advertise anything just as well as anybody else...but the fact remains that I pay no attention to this ad because this "face" simply doesn't inspire confidence as someone who would know anything about cholesterol. It's "just" a housewife. Put the same woman - same expression and everything - in a white lab coat and I might pay more attention to her. Have this woman as she now is trying to sell chocolate cake or something like that, and I'd pay attention to her. But as it is, the image doesn't inspire confidence in the message.

But if choosing monitors with smaller frames outside of the actual screen space is important when using 2 monitors...then wouldn't using a laptop and a secondary monitor be a bad idea? And are there any current monitor brands and models you would recommend? For instance, for the same price, should someone go for a slightly larger screen or a smaller one with Dell's "Ultrasharp" feature?
