Working WITH Elements & Energies
…instead of beating against them.

Have you noticed that some things come very naturally to you and yet the next person never really catches on? Perhaps you’ve seen it in reverse also. Someone attempts to teach you something and you just feel so clunky at it and yet you can tell it’s a breeze for your cohort.

The simple explanation to this is what could sound like an obvious answer and yet obvious or no, many people still don’t allow for this or live by it. It’s one thing to be receptive to a concept but it’s quite a whole other level to actually apply the wisdom there in. Bottom line – we’re just not all the same. Sounds so simple doesn’t it? And yet every day, whether it’s in the work environment or in any relationship situation, square pegs are being forced into round holes. This not only doesn’t serve the peg, it’s not serving the hole or the person doing the forcing.

Do I really need to tell you that not any one person can do everything? If that were the case there’d be one person in this world and no need for any more. We’re all different. We all have our own strengths and weaknesses. Wouldn’t it make sense to actually work with someone’s energies instead of beating against them?

Some people are really good at launching projects but may not be so good on follow through. Well, I’ve heard it said that the first step is 90% of the job. So, here’s someone who is really good at overcoming inertia. They were given a situation where something did not exist and they got the ball rolling. In so doing they did 90% of the project and you want to get down on them because they have no follow through.

Perhaps someone else is not so good at launching things, nor are they good on doing the bulk of the project but they sure do add excitement to the whole thing and keep up morale. After the person launching the project blew their wad overcoming inertia, you need someone to keep the excitement level up. Don’t think that kind of thing doesn’t have its place.

Then the next person is not good at starting or finishing or enthusiasm but they can work steady and get the long-haul, meat of the project done. They’re your best bet for this. They’ll have the stick-to-it-iveness to get the bulk of the work done.
Then there are those who are awesome refiners. They make good editors. They cross the t’s and dot the i’s. They make sure the content is exactly accurate. They also take the mostly finished project and put it in a presentable, appealing form.

And when the project ends (or in tandem), you’ll still need those folks who can sit in the stillness and envision the next project and also keep the daily stuff going even in the lull.

In order to work with people’s energies, you first have to accept that we are different and then have the desire to work with people's energies. There are many understanding tools that help us to get past the idea that everyone should be just the same. These tools also help us get past judgment. There’s a reason why people do what they do and there’s a place for their energy in this world. I don’t need to be just like the next person – they’ve got that covered. And I can cover some things they can’t. So, it would serve us all to open ourselves up to these differences and utilize them to our mutual advantage. I’ve found that natural energy and desire play major roles in whether someone is good at something or not.

Like I said, being open to information about different people's energies can get you past judgment and work in reality. Assumption, stereotyping, prejudice, “that’s the way it’s always been”, “accepted industry tradition” doesn’t serve anyone involved. Here’s a case in point from my personal history. I worked in engineering / manufacturing industries for many years as a technician. One thing that I’m really good at is taking lofty ideas and putting them into a language that the layman can understand. More specifically, I could translate engineering-ese into something that an assembler or customer could understand. Many engineers just flat don’t speak English, even when it’s their native language. Gives a whole new meaning to ESL – Engineering as a Second Language.

One good application for these natural communication talents of mine in the engineering / manufacturing industry is in writing assembly and test procedures or operating manuals for customers. Well, in that industry, the assumption is that technical writing is something that only tech writers or engineers do. Well, many companies don’t even bother to have technical writers, so that’s not even an option in their reality. And many engineers lack that natural ability to speak to the layman. They also just flat don’t want to do technical writing. Well, who could blame them? They didn’t take up design work to not design. Like I said, if anything could make or break whether someone does a good job at something is desire or lack there of.

But in the reality of the highly conditioned manager, technical writing is not something a technician does. Errr! Wrong answer… at least in my case. These abilities I possess have more to do with my natural energies than any college courses I’ve taken. It’s who I am. I could get a degree in tiddlywinks and still be good at translating lofty ideas into layman’s terms. Gee, perhaps I could stand to write an article on The Quantum Mechanics of Tiddlywinks for Dummies.

Many companies wouldn’t dream of utilizing me as a technical writer because I have a technician’s background. On the few rare occasions where I did do technical writing, assemblers and customers couldn’t praise me enough, even if management fought me tooth and nail. Can you say, “Shoot yourself in the foot”? I knew you could. Not only did I offer an example of someone with a natural talent, my technician work had also offered me the experience of being on the receiving end of technical documents. I knew how frustrating, ineffective and inefficient it was to use a poorly written document. I was the best choice for the job and yet it didn't fit the industry stereotype of "we've always had engineers write our procedures." Many of whom had never had to use those procedures themselves.

It would serve us all, in any relationship, to quit assuming, work with people’s energies instead of beating against them and step out of judgment. Do you have someone in your business that has a knack for something and yet doesn't get utilized for that? On the other hand, are they doing something that they don't even want to do. And you wonder why they may not be doing as well as you'd like to see. Perhaps what you've tasked them with wasn't even mentioned upon hire. It wasn't what they agreed to, it wasn't the job they accepted and yet you attempt to sneak it into their job duties. Is that work in line with their personal energies and natural talents?

Do you have someone in the work place that likes to control things? For goodness sakes put them in control of something. You don’t have to judge them as a “control freak” just work with their energies already. It’s not serving anyone involved to have them be someone’s lackey. Give them some project or department or something that they can be in control of. That may include overseeing others but it doesn’t need to. Just let them control something.

Do you have someone who really knows how to push? You don’t have to judge them as pushy you can put them in charge of getting a new project off the ground. Babies aren’t born and seeds don’t sprout without a good push. Life would not exist without a good push. And projects don’t get off the ground without a good push. Utilize this energy to your advantage.

Do you have someone who gets really excited? You don’t have to view them as manic or put them on drugs, just put them in a position where enthusiasm is key. Work it.

Do you have someone who is a perfectionist? You don’t need to judge them as picky just let them do the refining. Let them do the proofing, the finishing work on projects.

Do you have someone who is rather dreamy? You don’t have to judge that as useless daydreaming. They are imagining your next product or service. What a gift you have right there. That’s a new Einstein in the making you have. Are you sure you want to squelch that natural ability?

Understanding and working with people’s elements and energies can go a long ways towards making your business run as smoothly as it can, turning out quality products, and providing quality service to your customers. Learn to work with your own and other people’s energies. Utilize the best person for the task at hand.
