Eight Steps to Goal Setting
The coaching goal-setting loop consists of eight powerful steps:
1. Ensure that the goal is appropriate and is connected to the business results that your organization wants to achieve.
2. Discuss the impact of these goals on the individual and the organization.
3. Explore different action paths.
4. Explore the specific tasks and possible obstacles each of these paths entail.
5. Narrow the options to one or two that make the most sense from the individual and organizational perspective.
6. Identify resources needed for the action path taken.
7. Set a timeframe for achieving these goals.
8. Determine how the results will be measured.
Powerful Question:
- What is important and relevant to you and your organization?
- What is the impact when this goal is achieved?
- What are the ways to achieve this?
- Among all the steps, which way suits you the best? Why?
- What specifically needs to be done? What are the key obstacles?
- How can they be removed?
- What are the support and resources needed?
- How can you ensure that you get them?
- When will this goal be achieved?
- How do you know when you get there?
