LISTENING SKILLS IN COACHING

Once, someone shared this with me, "People say that I do not listen although I think I do listen all the time. I guess they must have their reasons for saying so, even though they did not elaborate. So, how do I know that Iím really listening and not appearing to do so? What really is listening?"

Listening is perhaps the most powerful tool to connect with people. Likewise, poor listening can destroy relationships as much as good listening can build them. When a person is listened to, they feel respected and in a way feel even more confident and "bigger".

Good listening is about knowing what the person is saying, what they mean by it, and why is it important to them. When these principles are ignored, the relationship stands little chance of growing and maturing.

Yet, what is the most important ingredient of good listening? Is it empathy? responsibility? commitment? curiosity? Indeed, good listeners are generally curious. They give undivided attention to the speaker, which is the first thing that must happen. They use listening gestures or responses such as "I see", "Hmm", "Oh!" and so on to show their interests. They frequently ask curious questions along the way.

Some powerful questions to ponder:
  • How can you be more curious when in conversation with people?
  • How can you give them total attention?
  • What are some good listening habits you can adopt to show that you enjoy or are interested in what your speaker is saying?
  • What habits are you guilty of when in conversation with people?
  • How can you cultivate good listening skills for effective coaching?
