Coaching Issue:
As a sales director of a hospitality organization, addressing groups of clients and members of the trade is often needed. This is the area where I am weak in and do not have the talent for it. Sometimes it can be so stressful that it makes me feel like I should quit this post and take up a back-office role so that I do not have to go through this ordeal. What do you think?
The Coach says...
What is in you now is an internal "map" that you have drawn up for yourself - it tells you that you cannot be a good public speaker while others can. This ‘internal' map is your reality and is not necessarily true. It therefore can be changed.
I suggest that you draw up a selection of speakers that you personally admire. Then you identify all the things that they do to get the results they want.
I am sure at the end of this exercise you will discover that many of the things they do are replicable, like pausing, posture, audience interactivity and so on.
So challenge yourself; try out these new behaviors and I am sure you will know that you have all the potential to be a good speaker.
Powerful Questions
- What is your new ‘internal map?
- Name five speakers that you admire. What are the things they do that you admire?
- What can you do for each one of those things identified?
- What resources do you have to make this work for you?
