Question to the Coach:
Is it necessary to be a certified coach if we want to be in professional coaching? I ask this because I already have more than 20 years exposure in organizational and business matters and have been training my own people and others for the same period of time. Also, I'm not sure if others who are already coaching actually have gone through a certification process.
The Coach says... Your experience will surely give you the added advantage to be a good coach but not a good certified coach. I agree with you that there are more non-certified coaches than certified ones in the marketplace. But the tide is slowly changing with more and more customers insisting that their coaches are certified and from established coaching institutions as well. Certification gives you two distinct advantages : instant credibility (as you will steer away from the non-certified self claimed coaches) and solid coaching competencies that will help you support your client's agenda and goals more effectively.
The Bottom Line...
Enroll in an established coaching institution that will give you a standing in the industry. A good program entails a number of training days together with a substantial number of hours of hands-on practices involving mentor, peer and supervised coaching.
Powerful questions...
- Do you want to build a long-term career in professional coaching?
- What are you prepared to invest in yourself to gain credibility and solid ability in the coaching field?
- What commitment will you make to ensure that your goal is kept intact and is achieved?
- What will you do now, and when will you start?
