Ways to Get Team Commitment
Question to the Coach:
We have been operating the business based on teamwork for many years. The results are definitely better than before when we were driven more by personal or individual performance. The issue now is on the team members' commitment. Some are committed but some are not. In many cases, it is the committed members who are making things work. Can you share some tips on how we can improve team performance?
The Coach replies:
Many people talk about having teams in their workplace but they do not put in real efforts in making them solid teams that are truly united in shared goals and efforts. Many simply tell their people that "they have to work together" and let nature (or perhaps even luck) takes its course to make things work. So if you want dynamic teams, you need to put in real effort in a proper structure to power up their energy for the best results to happen.
The Bottom Line:
- Articulate an inspiring goal.
- Get commitment from each team member by asking each one to write down why they are passionate (or not passionate) about this goal.
- Then, get each member to write down how they are going to achieve it.
- Get into a deep dialogue until a common ground is reached where all members come together with objectives agreed on, conflicts ironed out and ready for action.
- Following this, give each one a challenging assignment that helps them with their professional development.
- Finally, give and get feedback at every juncture.
- Who are the members of the team?
- How much do you know about them?
- What is an inspiring goal that you want your team to come together for?
- What will you ask from each one in what they will do for the goal?
- What will you as a leader do to support each of them in this journey?
