Battling the Bully - Standing Up for Yourself with Confidence and Assertiveness

When I was young, there was a girl who was a year younger and a foot taller than me. She bullied me for approximately two years. One day something inside of me snapped; I decided I wasn't going to take her abuse any longer and stood up to her. Unfortunately, our confrontation ended in a fight, which I won. She never picked on me again. I learned at an early age that if you allow people to bully, harass, or cut you down, then they will do so. If, on the other hand, you make a decision to stand up for yourself and not allow the bully to take control, then s/he will move on to someone or something else.

Avoiding defending yourself and confronting others in difficult situations can have many origins. Your parents may have told you not to fight with other kids, you may not have had the self-confidence to confront someone's bullying tactics, or you may have felt that you would lose in any kind of physical battle. If you never developed the self-esteem and self-confidence to defend yourself, you still may be allowing others to take advantage of or bully you.

If you are ready to battle and defeat the bullies in your life, there are four steps you can take to develop your self-esteem, ensuring that you meet all future battles with self-confidence and success.

1.Loving yourself. The first step is to learn how to love and appreciate yourself by itemizing and reminding yourself of your unique gifts, talents, attributes, and skills. Everyone has something to offer the world; you are no different. Also, understand that no one deserves to be abused, in any manner. We all deserve happiness and love, and a life free of abuse. Do things that make you feel good, and be around people who love you unconditionally.

2.Taking responsibility. The second step is to understand that you are responsible for what happens in your life. You can either allow others to take advantage of you and use you as a doormat or you can put a stop to this. Only you can dictate who takes advantage of you and who doesn't. Once you accept responsibility for how you allow others to treat you, and stop blaming them, you will feel empowered and your life will dramatically change for the better.

3.Developing a solid plan of action. Once you accept responsibility for how others treat you, your next step is to explore and develop solutions and strategies for saying no, not allowing others to treat you in a negative manner, and how to assert yourself so that others can't take advantage of you. For example, if someone asks you to do something that you don't want to do, a solution might be to say no, in a neutral manner, and explain the reason for your decision. Once people understand why you're saying no, they may be more willing to let go of their request, especially if you don't waver in your firmness. If people want to treat you poorly, tell them that you are more than willing to discuss what might be bothering them, but that you will not entertain insults or any type of disrespect. If you stand your ground without raising your voice, this can help to defuse the situation. By avoiding anger, and pointing out in an assertive manner what you want, what you expect, and what you won't allow, you will learn how to keep your bullies at bay. To develop self-esteem and confidence, don't rule out taking an empowerment or self-defense class. Although a self-defense class teaches you how to physically defend yourself, it can also help to build your self-confidence.

4.Practicing your plan of action. The fourth step is using every available opportunity to implement your plan of action. In other words, practice saying no, and assertively stating what you need and how you want to be treated. Start with small issues/problems and people who are less intimidating. Practice on your friends and family members. Remember the old adage "Practice makes perfect." The more you practice and experience success, however small, the more confident you will become, which will help you to tackle the most troublesome issues and the largest bullies.

If you are tired of being pushed around and taken advantage of, know that you are responsible for how others treat you; that you can develop a plan of action with strategies for saying no, being assertive, and taking control; and that by practicing the implementation of your strategies, you can defend yourself in any situation with confidence and assertiveness. Remember to start with minor issues and problems, and with individuals who are not as much of a threat. Monitor which approaches work and which ones don't. Celebrate your successes, continue to use those methods that work best for you, and watch your life change for the better. After all, no one deserves to be bullied. So, begin to take control today and tame the bullies in your life!

Boosting Confidence Boosting Confidence - Confidence is something all of us women could stand to have infused in our blood 24/7! It’s one of those areas that many struggle with the most. Through my coaching practice, I’ve discovered an underlying thread that seems to undermine confidence in some women. It has to do with confusing true confidence with pride or arrogance. Confidence is being sure of who you are and what you are able to do in a way that does not compare yourself to others. It is not dependent on value because every one of us women is valuable. Pride or arrogance is when someone lifts him or herself above others as if they are more valuable than others. It also seems to be related to "approval addiction" where the self esteem must continually be fed by others or they don't feel good about themselves. Thus, some arrogant people put others down so they can see themselves as above. Confidence is simply being all of the great woman you already are. You want to create a great business and you want to do your job well. It is not prideful to be confident in what you are doing. I invite you to give yourself permission to really let your abilities come forward and see what happens to you and your business as a result. I’d also love to hear what methods you have for boosting your own confidence.
Legal due diligence Legal due diligence - It seems like you've gotten a lot of advice on how to "value" your prospective venture. But here is something else to keep in mind: do the legal due diligence. 1. What type of structure is it? Corporation, LLC, etc? Is it in "Good Standing?" 2. Does the business have any written contracts, if so with whom? (E.G. advertisers, vendors, employees) 3. Who owns the intellectual property? Copyrights to content, trademarks? 4. How is revenue generated? How do the sellers want to be compensated? Are they willing to do an earn-out? 5. Are there any lawsuits pending or threatened? These are just a couple ideas....

Re: Boosting Confidence Re: Boosting Confidence - Kevin, I am so glad you asked that question! It's the missing link for so many people (and a huge key to confidence and entrepreneurial endurance). Since you asked the question hypothetically, when I say "you", I'm not meaning you personally, Kevin (unless you identify with it). Our purpose is like our personal mission statement. It's something we need to consciously sit down and think about. The problem is that so many have blocked their own voice and focused on outside influence instead. We need to practice listening to our own inner self. Confidence is found within so this is where we need to start. It means we need to trust that we actually do have the answers to what it is we need to know for our own personal success. They key to our purpose is actually tied in with what we really love to do. To start discovering what your purpose is, start discovering what you are really passionate about. Then begin asking yourself what you would love to do that would make a huge difference in that particular area. For example, if you love technology and also desire to help people, ask yourself how you can really help people using your technology. If your business is already established, start considering how you can develop the next phase of it to match your sense of purpose. Perhaps it's even time to delegate your work so that you can be freed up to pursue what you REALLY love to do. The great side effect is that most of us do a far better job at what we love to do anyway. Many people don't even get to this point because they disqualify their sense of passion and purpose before they even really discover the way to build financial success based on what they love to do. Some consider it a "pipe dream", but I say, "Why not?" You mention money, but what some people don't realize is that you must discover you purpose or your personal mission FIRST if you are to tap into passion to create the kind of wealth that is really satisfying. If you talk to people with money, you will discover that financial success is not what truly makes you happy. Satisfaction is the key ingredient. Developing a business which matches your passion and your purpose ensures you will enjoy the success when you get there. When you pursue developing your business from this place, confidence comes along side you because you are aware you have a personal mission to help others or create change in some way. It takes the focus off you and gives you confidence to overcome what could seem like incredibly challenging obstacles. If you are simply chasing money, there will come a point that you will really question if it is all even worth it. You may be faced with this question regardless, but if you have purpose, you often find the fortitude to really press forward anyhow. I hope that answers your question, Kevin. Warm regards, Tami
