Sustainability is a broad term that is often alluded to systems that are prone to depletion. The word is often used in regards to the environment and natural resources but can also be aptly linked to businesses, considering the law of averages suggest that the majority of small businesses that lack vision, a clear-cut goal and a robust system fade away within a short period of time. A boom in the network marketing opportunities has also renewed debates over the long term prospects of the industry.
So what are the basic requirements to build a sustainable online business?
• Objective - The first and foremost is to be crystal clear in your mind about your goals. This is what I refer to as the ‘What’ stage, i.e., what is it that you wish to achieve? Why have you decided to embark on a journey to the B-Quadrant?
When you have an honest answer to these questions you can be rest assured that you have made a good start!
• Planning – Once your goals are set you enter the ‘How’ stage. How are you going to convert your thoughts into action? An important component here is to spend quality time in conducting a thorough research which will not only help you decide on the DOs and DON’Ts but will also assist you to choose the right course of action based on your own unique requirements.
This stage also involves a major focus on the distribution of your financial resources. Prioritize your marketing needs and invest in campaigns that will bring you the maximum return on investment (ROI).
• Be a part of a proven system – This is probably the most important factor that decides the sustainability of any online business. A system that has enough strength, ingenuity and flexibility to serve your long term interests, not only in terms of putting cash into your wallet but also ensuring a continuous personal development through training. According to my experience, this is immensely important, as more you develop your entrepreneurial skills the better you will be equipped to leverage the effectiveness of the system to build your brand and grow your business.
• Focus on ‘You, the Inc.’ – Network marketing is all about ‘You’. People do not buy your products, they buy into your ideas and thoughts. The very fact that the success stories of online network marketing businesses revolve around individuals rather than the products/services is a resounding testimonial towards this argument.
Once you have mastered the art of promoting yourself as a brand, everything else will normally fall into place.
• Be practical and realistic – These are the qualities that are must to be a successful online entrepreneur. Set realistic goals as abundance doesn’t come overnight (unless you win a lottery!). Always keep in mind that you are here for the long haul and any shortcut approaches are most likely to set you back rather than take you forward. Having said that, it is not unusual to achieve great rewards within a short period of time if you get the basics right (as mentioned above).
Last but by no means least, it is the ‘mindset’ that decides the fate of an online marketing business (or any business for that matter). Your ‘never say die’ attitude along with a strong entrepreneurial mindset will see you through the challenges and occasional struggles and lay a rock solid foundation for a sustainable and rewarding online business.
