Be SURE to Accomplish What You Want
So we're one month into the New Year. Are you on track to accomplishing what you want in 2010? Are you clear on your vision, goals, and action steps to take? If you are, that's great! Congratulations! That's only the first step though...
Never forget that all results are driven by actions. If you want to get some place that you've never been before, you need to do things differently or to do different things. Here is the problem though: There are forces that keep us continually doing the same things we have always done. It's called conditioning. That is- ingrained attitudes, habits, and patterns of behavior that are difficult to break.
Now we've identified the why. Here is the good news: Difficult does not mean impossible! There are many ways to bridge the gap between thoughts and action. Here is one that you can apply immediately.
First, a question: Who are you accountable to? As an entrepreneur, small business owner, or CEO who do you report to? Probably just yourself, right? So, who do you bounce new ideas off of? Who do you talk through problems with or vent to? Here is who it is not: your employees, your competition, and most likely not your spouse. Who does that leave? These people all have their own agendas or might not be appropriate to share actions with or have high level business conversations. (OK, so that was more than one question...)
Here is your solution: You've heard of "It takes a village." Well, that doesn't just apply to raising a child. It applies to business as well. Form a board of directors for yourself, join or start a mastermind group, or get an accountability partner. The idea is that you create an environment for yourself that motivates you to take actions that you need to, especially those that are out of your comfort zone.
Here are real world results: I've had clients tell me that they wouldn't have done what they needed to and HAD COMMITTED TO if I wasn't coming to meet with them the next day. That created the environment where they didn't want to tell themselves that they didn't do what they said they would do. They act of being accountable to someone else drove the necessary and desired actions. And guess what, The Results Followed! I've since been asked to clone myself so that I could continually be in people's offices as a reminder for them to act. I'm taking that under advisement...
As people, we are more productive when we have a stated deadline and are held accountable to it. When you know that you will be asked next week about a commitment you made today, you will take steps to accomplish it by the next week's deadline. This provides extra motivation to get the job done. It's a sure way to make sure that you accomplish what you want to in 2010 and beyond.
