Lower Stress By Increasing Attitude

STRESS. How do you deal with it? It's something that effects all of us in different ways. Some of us let more bother us than others. And regardless of how much we let in, some let more show externally (i.e. wearing your emotions on your sleeve.) Most importantly, it's how you handle stress internally that will have an effect on your well being.

So much happens or happens to us during the course of any given day. It's not what happens to us that is as important as how we react to what happens to us. And what drives our reactions or behaviors? It's our thoughts or attitudes toward that particular stimulus.

First we have a stimulus. We are conditioned to think in a certain way regarding that stimulus and our behaviors reflect those thoughts.

A key question is: "Are you getting the outcome that you want in terms of your emotional well being?" Stress can have many negative effects on us, especially physically and emotionally.

Think about how you react when you are driving and somebody cuts you off. What do you do? How about when your kids are acting "particularly independent"? Or when a customer or co-worker is rude or difficult to deal with?

These can all be difficult and stressful situations to deal with. We may have always allowed them to bother us. But remember, our thoughts are the one thing in this world that we have complete control over. And since our thoughts and attitudes lead to our behaviors or responses to stimuli which lead to our outcomes, then we are in complete control of how we respond to any situation.

Someone cut you off? Change your attitude to: you don't know what's happening in their life. Be glad you are safe and wish them the best.

Dealing with a rude customer? Change your attitude to: they may be having a bad day and you are not going to let it affect your day.

Kids tough to deal with? They are just doing their job. Change your attitude to: this doesn't bother me (as hard as that may be.) In each of these cases, can you imagine how you would feel if those were your attitudes? These are perfect examples of how changing your attitudes can change your stress level.

Here are some action steps that you can take immediately to change your attitudes and change your stress level:

1) Determine where stress in your life is coming from

2) Reflect and write down what your thoughts are (they lead to your behavior)

3) Decide how you want your reactions or behavior to be different

Your stress level and your ability to manage your level of stress will determine how well you interact with everyone around you. Remember, you always have a choice as to how you react to any situation. Be 100% in control and take charge of your well being!

Re: Today's Hottest Franchise? Re: Today's Hottest Franchise? - I try to keep up on some of the hot franchises, I have noticed an increase in interest in the service industries. Lower cost, lower overhead etc... I think this is because most folks have less to invest or less they are willing to risk. John Henning Franchise Consultant
Re: Infographic: The 4 Main Stress Factors Re: Infographic: The 4 Main Stress Factors - I'd like to reference that article in my next blog post as well.. I worked in sales for years and found that days when I was positive, relaxed where days that it was easy to sell. On days that I was stressed I found I would not reach target. Stress is good at times, but it very easily becomes problematic. I do a lot of very physical exercise and work now, to manage it.
Re: What to do at the first roadblock? Re: What to do at the first roadblock? - Upon first discouragement, dig in and see if things are as they seem. Sometimes, even though there are several products out there that appear comparable, they are no match. Maybe they do don't a good job of what they are intended for, or maybe there are several glitches in their system, or perhaps their customer service just plain stinks. Decide how you can "one up" all of these things and decide that you are going to create a better product that more people would want. Attitude is 95% of the battle. If you feel defeated before you've done any research on any of the other products, you're doing yourself a huge disservice. Give yourself a chance and see if you can be the BEST in every way. This will get you far no matter what the venture.
Re: Who hates cold calling? Re: Who hates cold calling? - About 15 years ago I worked for this sales company that used to sell anything from Kitchen Knives to Dry Cell Torches. The owner was a very motivating guy and he would ask us to get to the office by 7.00AM and we could sing and dance for an hour before we went to sell the products in the streets, stopping anyone and telling them our products were on discount. We used to sell snow to Eskimos, why were we able to do that? because of PMA (Positive Mental Attitude). The key to cold calling is like beauty, in eyes of the beholder. If you have no PMA, you cannot sell. Remember the law of average that states that if you went to a dance and every girl or guy you approached for a dance decline your proposal. What do you do? Do you stop? If you have a PMA, you continue until you get one person who agree to dance with you despite how ugly you look, that is is PMA and that is the power of cold calling.
