Interview with Jan Marie Dore

1.) Why did you start your business and who was your first customer?

I started my business after leaving my corporate job to go out on my own. I had always wantedto have my own business and to help business owners do better at business. My first customer was a coffee shop owner who ws new in business and really needed help with planning and strategy.

2.) What is the best advice you can give to new entrepreneurs?

Take some business and marketing classes to understand how to run and promote your business. Look for mentors who have succeeded at what you want to do to really shorten your learning curve and have a better chance of succeeding. And make a plan.

3.) What is the most important action a business owner should do to be successful with his/her business?

Plan for success. Take time away from the office a few days a year to plan your next quarter or year and get an objective view of your business.

4.) Should a business owner have a mentor to stay more motivated?

Absolutely - a mentor or a coach will increase your chances of success and keep you connected with your passion and motivation. You'll be able to move through challengesan notget stuck.

5.) What is a proven tactic that helps business owners stay productive?

Plan your week and work your plan. Prioritize. Schedule time for your most important revenue generatingactivities first thing in the morning before the distractions start.

6.) What is your secret weapon to staying successful?

Always having a coach or mentor, being part of a mastermind, and ongoing continuing education. I quite often attend seminars and training programs to keep current and informed about best practices.

7.) How does one know how to prioritize the various challenges in their life?

Most business owners have a good instinct to know which challenge is the most importart one to solve first. It's just that they don't always solve the important challenges. They tend to work on the easier things first.

8.) As a business coach what is the most common issue business owners have?

Business growth and money issues. Either business growth is stalled, or it's not being managed well,or cashflow is inconsistent.

Interesting! Interesting! - I've never heard of Second Life before this, and it sounds really neat! I like the idea of it, though, and I'm going to look into it. As a huge fan of video games, and MMO's, it sounds like a perfect blend. ~Marie
Hi there! Hi there! - I agree, pick up some good books from your local bookstore about how big-name companies have made it. There are also tons of magazines out, if you have a large bookstore nearby, take a few minutes to flip through some that target your needs specifically. ~Marie
Nice List Nice List - Nice list, and I agree with everything you all have added! Planning is the biggest one of all! Look at everything from every aspect possible, and then ask others to look at it as well. It's extremely important that you consider everything before jumping into things, and it goes so much smoother! Also, some young entrepreneurs tend to have an unrealistic mindset (I can sell 4000 of this product in my first week!). Make sure you know what you're getting into, and don't expect something that won't ever happen. ~Marie
