YouTube expands to 9 nations with Google's help
- That's amazing! Although, with all the money Google spent on buying YouTube I guess it's not much of a surprise that Google is putting such an effort on making YouTube even more of a success. I personally don't like it though, they are really cracking down on the content people are allowed to post on YouTube due to copyright reasons.
Re: Is YouTube Going Commercial?
-
I think it's safe to say that YouTube is going more commercial and providing ways for advertisers to take advantage of User Generated Content.[/quote:e47a61ur]
But I think YouTube should also consider that what's best for them (i.e. earning advertiser dollars) may not be what's best for their users. There has to be some sort of balance or YouTube will lose both advertising revenue and its customers.
How can a social networking site like YouTube earn money from sponsors without being too intrusive in the "user experience"?

I agree there needs to be a balance.
Don't they already have one example of this in place? Google Adsense video units is the one I'm thinking of. Basically a YouTube ad or commercial from their partners placed on webmasters' sites.

I agree, I think that if they become too commercial there will be a great percentage of their audience who will get fed up and stop watching. When people are looking for entertainment they do not want to be bombarded with advertising.

Re: Hit or Miss: Dancejam
-

But, by doing that you radically decrease the target audience and are automatically limited the number of people that the site will appeal to. Why not have various sections of the site to focus on different dance styles.

I was just suggesting that they start small and then expand later.
But then my argument would be why should someone leave the comfort of YouTube then?
As an "artist" in my own respect (i.e. through my drawings, writing and baking/cooking), we're the type of people who want to reach the largest audience possible with our creations. Why would I want to showcase my artwork to a site like Dancejam which isn't even mainstream?[/quote:2lvndxv5]
On YouTube, many people are "lost" by the mass of information there. On a niche site, they have a much better chance of being seen by people who actually care about and appreciate what they are doing. So, is it better to maybe be seen by a million people who may not care what you do or get in front of hundreds or thousands who are interested in what you are doing??
For example - I'm a home improvement contractor. Getting in front of college students who live in a dorm or renters does me no good. But, getting in front of homeowners is very valuable for me. Its about getting in front of people who want and/or need or are interested in what you have to offer.
The person could start out on the dance site and if the video becomes popular - post it on YouTube and ask all the fans from the dance site to vote on the video on YouTube. Build an audience where people are interested in the content and bring fans to a bigger site - when they can help gain visibility and exposure.
