The Challenge of Wealth Creation
In order to find a definition of 'wealth' I would suggest you Google the topic. This is how Wikipedia defines it:
"Wealth is an abundance of valuable material possessions or resources. The word is derived from the old English 'wela', which is from an Indo-European word stem. An individual, community, region or country that has an abundance of such possessions or resources is called wealthy".
This definition, unfortunately, creates the impression that wealth consists only of material possessions, and it is my strong belief that this assumption is incorrect. Wealth is a rather complex issue, and consequently people encounter many challenges during the process of wealth creation.
- In the first place we have to understand that wealth is good. There is a false perception, at least among some people, that being rich is bad. It is my observation that, in the past, certain religions have been happily perpetuating this myth since a poor population could be manipulated much more easily (under the assumption that they would, indeed, be rewarded in a 'next life'). Obviously such limitations were not imposed on the church itself and when traveling thru Europe I never cease to be amazed at the incredible wealth amassed by the 'church' during the Middle Ages. Always remember that money is neutral; it just 'amplifies' things. It allows generous people to give more, and misers to hoard more.
- Wealth requires hard work. Although people accasionally win the Saturday Lotto or inherit large sums of money, this instant wealth often disappears as quickly as it is gained, due to a lack of financial skills. Wealth is, in essence, a yardstick of how much value we add to other people's lives. And this adding of value does not happen by magic.
- Wealth involves a specific mindset. Beliefs about wealth on the 'inside' (in the mind) manifest themselves in the physical world. If you ever envy or despise other people for being 'filthy rich', you are viewing life with a poverty mindset and that explains why financial success keeps evading you. You are what you think. And in your subconscious mind you need to truly, fully, embrace the concept of wealth, even if you are not right now as wealthy as you'd like to be. In fact, people working towards increasing their wealth should work harder, on a daily basis, on their mind-sets than they do on the skill-sets!
- Wealth is a relative thing. If I, personally, would do my annual balance sheet and found my net worth to be only a quarter of a million dollars, I would be pretty upset. In Australia this is not a lot of money and even our little cottage in the countryside is worth more than this. However, without checking the statistics I can almost guarantee you that the majority of the world population is worse off than you and I and would regard an individual with a few thousand dollars in the bank as 'wealthy'. Which brings me to the next point.
- Wealth goes hand in hand with gratitude. The more grateful we are for what we already have, the more we receive. This is simply a law of the universe; just like gravity.
- Wealth is multi-faceted. It does not only revolve around money. It also involves things such as career, relationships, family life, mental state, education, physical fitness, health, spiritual life, and social life. A really wealthy person has so much more than just dollars in the bank. Motivational speaker and trainer James Ray coined the phrase 'harmonic wealth' to describe this concept.
- We cannot give away what we don't have. We cannot love others if we don't love ourselves, and we cannot help others financially if we are broke. Poor people are much more obsessed with money than rich people! If I could have my life over again, with hindsight, I would work obsessively to a point where I had an abundance of residual income in my early twenties so that I could focus on more important things, instead of slaving away as a salary-earner for so many years.
- Education is a pre-requisite for wealth. It requires wisdom, understanding, and a profound knowledge of the means through which we choose to acquire material wealth (e.g. Internet marketing), as well as ways of investing that money. And this requires diligent self-evaluation, training and life-long learning. The activity of wealth-related self-education should be as much a part of one's daily regimen as is eating and sleeping. Alas, wealth creation is not part of any syllabus in traditional education.
And so, my friend, I wish you wealth, health, and much happiness in the pursuit of your personal wealth. Start moving in that direction!
