Change Your Friends

Guest post by: Jordan Crouter

Article Overview: You will only be as successful as the people you associate with the most. So take a look around you and see if you are living up to your potential or limiting yourself to the potential of your closest friends. If not, you might want to consider a change in your social scene. Don't let your current close associates be the ones that are pulling you down or holding you back from reaching your highest dreams and goals.

Change Your Friends

Did you ever notice when you were growing up that sometimes you and your parents didn't really agree on things. You just figured that they were old fashioned and just out of touch with the times. I remember as a kid growing up, my parents were very particular about the friends that I kept. And strangely enough, I always wanted to spend time with some of those same friends that they actually said were not good for me. Now that I am a father myself and have two little boys of my own, I can relate to what they were thinking. But, at the time, I thought they were not only clueless as to how my social life needed to be run but that they should mind their own business. I am so glad that they stood their ground and stepped in when necessary to help me not get too far off course because they could see how important keeping the right friends was going to be to my eventual success.

So how does that apply to our business you ask. I remember one of the seminars that I attended last year, the facilitator said "If you want to change your life, change the people you hang out with!" The participants all of a sudden got very silent. Did you every think that as a mature adult that someone was going to point out the harsh reality that you had made wrong choices and that your friends might be holding you back. But, isn't that exactly what our business is all about. Aren't we always trying to help people rekindle those dreams and aspirations that they had so long ago. And who is it that is typically the first to say to us that our new business is a scam and it won't work. Kind of reminds me of the story about the guy who had a bunch of crabs in a bucket with out a lid on it. The guy's friend said that he'd better be careful because they would crawl out and he said he wasn't worried because the other crabs would reach up and pull them back down into the bucket with all the other crabs. Isn't that the way our family and friends react to our new found vision of what we can do with our lives. After all, we are the ones that are brave enough to dream and think that we can break out of our old habits and do what it takes to change.

Well, we can't change our family but we can change our friends. That is what the speaker was trying to say and it is so painfully true. If you want to break away from the pack then you have to make changes. So face the cold reality of saying are we going to repeat last years results, or will this be a different year ahead. You have to do what it takes and if that means changing your friends, then maybe you should give it some thought.

Re: pitching Re: pitching - Friendliness is closely related to the concept of "permission marketing" as articulated by Seth Godin. The subtitle of his book says it all: "Permission Marketing: Turning Strangers into Friends and Friends into Customers." The old method was "interruption marketing" where you suddenly get an ad in your face whether you want it or not...

Re: Spellcheck? Re: Spellcheck? - [quote="TheAnonymousMan":2f894q6j]When discussing the majority of people I would definitely say that most people hit the "Change" or "Ignore" button without thinking too much about the correct spelling of a word. All bosses are concerned about is getting the report to the Directors meeting on time.[/quote:2f894q6j] That probably depends on what the "majority" are trying to accomplish. I have word set to alert me about misspellings and grammatical problems, so I fix most as I go. But I also add names etc to the dictionary because I get tired of seeing the red and green squiggles when I know the info is right. If you're only going to click "Change" or "Ignore" then why bother to take the time to use spell check????? Business people that I work for want the info compiled in a timely manner and they want it right - which is fine because that's the way I strive to do any project. Sending out a memo, letter, report etc with obvious spelling and grammatical mistakes makes the person and the company look bad as far as I'm concerned. Shri
