Dig Your Well Before You Are Thirsty

My father has made a point of reminding his children, I have three brothers and a sister, that if there is anything that he learned over his years of working in corporate America with various companies, it is that you should never through away your rolodex. That is one of those old-fashioned rotating business card holders that has now been replaced by social networking. Thank goodness.

I get his point, however, which is that you should always maintain and actually nurture your network of friends and associates. That includes professionals in all fields. Harvey Mackay, bestselling author, tells how his dad had shared that same counsel with him and it made a world of difference as he entered the world of business and publishing. You never know when you might come across a situation in your life or your business that you would need the expertise of one of your former colleagues or associates. If you strive to keep in touch frequently with your network of friends, it could save you time and a lot of headache in trying to locate a former associate or to rekindle a friendship.

Harvey said he followed his dad's advice and it paid off as he needed to get financing and help for his business and because he had kept those networks active and nurtured them, he was able to get the financial support he needed. But, they key was that he wasn't building these relationships for him to merely have people to use, but he adopted the philosophy of reciprocating as much as possible and helping others before he felt he might even need their help. Hence, he was digging the well before he needed it and that is the message that he continues to teach, thus, dig your well before you are thirsty.
