McGwire Finally Admited to Steroid Use in the Past

So Mark McGwire has finally admitted that he wants to talk about the past. In a much awaited interview McGwire has finally come clean about his steroid use in baseball throughout his record breaking career. The only question I would ask is: “what took you so long?” In a baseball era filled with needles and syringes, there have been several players who have come clean and lived to fight another day. Arod and Giambi most recently come to mind. America has a funny way of forgiving people who readily admit their mistakes in the sports world. San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy understands this interesting trend: “The ones who have come forward and been straight have been forgiven, and they’ve moved on. The fans of baseball have dealt with them in a positive way.”

In taking a closer look, the only players who continue to have a tarnished image are the ones who have remained silent or tried to dance around the accusations. Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Manny Ramirez, and David Ortiz. These guys haven’t figured the pattern out—say you’re sorry, come clean, promise to never do it again and stay out of future trouble. Done. End of Story. America will forgive and move on. It’s in our nature. We have this inherent characteristic when it comes to athletes. We don’t like to hold grudges when accountability has been taken. It’s not that hard to figure out. Kobe Bryant did it in the basketball world—look at his repaired image—it’s almost angelic at this point.

Now that McGwire has admitted his mistakes, we shall see how long it will take to repair his image. He may have waited too long. A lot of damage has been done. His silence over the last few years has screamed his guiltiness to the world. The American public likes action to be taken fast. Only time will tell if McGwire’s future with the American public is here to forget about the past. Only time will tell…..
