The Sky Is Falling?

Guest post by: Jordan Crouter

Article Overview: With all of the natural disasters that are occurring in the world it could be easy to say, "The sky is falling," like Chicken Little did. Even though things might appear bleak at the time, make the most of the situation and see how you can make it work to your advantage.

The Sky Is Falling?

Remember the children's story about "Chicken Little" who got hit on the head with a falling acorn and assumed that it foretold the end of everything and the sky was coming down? So he ran incited fear and trembling in his friends Ducky Lucky and Henny Penny and they all ran and hid to avoid the falling sky.

You'll agree with me that it seems that the news of horrendous natural disasters seems to be on the increase. The occurrences of earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons, hurricanes, floods seems to be not only increasing but the damage and energy behind them is becoming almost unbelievable. Agreed? The global economic conditions we find ourselves in with countries failing financially seems to be just the point of the spear and don't you wonder where is the tipping point? Our fears are certainly not unfounded as we witnessed the house of cards called the mortgage backed securities of the sub-prime marketplace tumble around us after years of unchecked lending and lax guidelines. Yep - it looks pretty bleak out there - doesn't it?

So what are your options, Well, you can crawl in a corner, assume the fetal position, grab your favorite blankey and start babbling like a fool. Or, you can do whatever it takes to take control of your life for the sake of your family and your own sanity. I chose the later.

So what if the sky is falling. What a great opportunity to sell protective gear and helmets. Isn't it true that when you ask those who are financially comfortable right now that now is a great time to buy real estate. What do they say about smart investors in the market place. Buy when the market is down, don't wait until it's coming up to make your buying decision.

That only leads me to believe that we are in a great time of opportunity and that there will be many who come out of these difficult times having made the most of the situation and put themselves into a position to control their own destiny instead of being at the mercy of governments or corporations.

If you are of the opinion that you would like to position yourself to be a survivor and one who comes out on top of this situation, take a little time and analyze your current situation. Are you completely dependent upon a boss, a corporation, a spouse, the government to provide for you and your family? Are you subject to losing your life insurance, your medical benefits, your house, your dreams if a bean counter at corporate shows someone that the bottom line will be helped by eliminating your job.?

Take steps now to develop some other streams of income as a business owner that will be there as a spare tire should you find yourself in that position. Never mind the possible tax advantages of being a small business owner, but consider how much better you'll feel when the Chicken Little's in your life come around screaming, "The sky is falling!"

Avoid Franchise Mistakes Avoid Franchise Mistakes - I Came across these 7 tips for helping you avoid costly mistakes when buying a franchise & thought they would be helpful... It takes a lot of money to build a business, and you certainly don't want to waste any. Check this list of 7 costly mistakes to avoid. 1. Letting emotions rule. Falling in love with a franchise concept is a common mistake. Don't let your emotions guide your decisions. Use your head, do your due diligence and take the time to thoroughly investigate the franchisor's offering. 2. No professional team. Don't try to do your own financials, contract reviews, or negotiating. The cost of professional franchise attorneys, accountants, and advisors is money well spent. 3. Too little cash. Lack of capital is the number one reason franchisees fail. Item 7 in the UFOC will tell you how much money you'll need with a low and high range. Be smart-go with the high range. Then ask current franchisees if the numbers are high enough. 4. Penny wise and pound foolish. Choosing one franchise over another because the initial franchisee fees are lower is shortsighted. It assumes that all franchises are alike and nothing could be further from the truth. Choose the franchise with the proven concept and strongest track record. 5. Too much help. Payroll is the biggest part of overhead for most franchise businesses. New franchisees often hire too many people or pay too much in wages. A good franchisor will provide a good staffing plan. Stick to the plan. 6. No comparison. Never buy expensive equipment, supplies or inventory without shopping around first. Even if your franchisor offers group purchasing, do your own research, shop as many vendors as you can, consider aftermarket suppliers, and weigh different financing options (loans or leases). 7. Marketing blunders. As a new business owner, you're going to be targeted by every ad salesperson around. Ignore them. Follow your franchisor's marketing plan to the letter to avoid wasting thousands.
