Something Better for Executives
A few weeks ago, an opportunity came to me that was very exciting. It had all of the elements of what I love to do: coaching a group of professionals with big goals and big dreams but who were temporarily stuck in the "what if it doesn't work, what if we're not right, what if we fail" mode. It came to me so quickly that it almost took my breath away.
I've had this inner knowing (and still do) that 2010 will be a spectacular year for anyone who is willing to "tune in" and "turn on" to their own unlimited self potential. That would be me and the wonderful clients with whom I work! This offer seemed to validate everything that I was feeling. What made it even more amazing was that I had no competition. My offer would be the only one considered.
I sent my proposal on a Wednesday and waited. The following Monday I received a call. There was a change of plans. The company had lost a major contract. There would be no new expenditures in the near-term. Maybe down the road.
For a minute, I was disappointed.
For a minute, I saw myself dramatizing my disappointment to my family.
For a minute, I saw them feeling sorry for me.
For a minute, I felt sorry for me.
For a minute.
Then I thought, "There must be something else that I am supposed to do with my time. Something that will be more beneficial to the client and to me. "
My soul was filled with extreme appreciation. My spirits soared. I was free to continue focusing on win/win situations.
Later that day, new opportunities landed in my "in box." Within 48 hours, I had two new clients. My skill set was perfect for them and they were perfect for me.
You can imagine how this turn of events made me feel.
Guess what? Even if these new clients had not come my way, I would still be filled with appreciation and the sense that the "deal" I thought was so exciting, was not the right deal for me or, obviously, for the client.
The Coaches Training Institute, where I received my certification in executive coaching, has a saying: "Shift happens."
Yes, it does! I've shifted from lamenting seemingly "lost opportunities" to knowing that something better is on the way.
This "something better" may not come as quickly as we'd like, but if we are open to the literally millions of ways that we can do work that matters to us and get paid well for it, something better will come.
As my own coach says, "It's the law!"

Male vs female networking
- [quote:2zrnzg30]I could imagine at a higher level that Executives could possibly treat women different to men.[/quote:2zrnzg30]
I wonder if there's an age difference between how men and women react. Men over the age of 40 are used to dealing with their "old boy network" I think, whereas younger guys have more experience dealing with women of power in the work place.
And then there's women - those over 40 no how much effort was put into getting equal treatment, whereas women under 40 don't appreciate what had gone before.
That's an over-generalization, I suppose, but I wonder if its true?
Resources for Women Entrepreneurs
- Dear Shimmy. As the past president of the Canadian Association of Women Executives and Entrepreneurs I can tell you that there are a lot of resources available for female entrepreneurs in Canada. The government both Federally and Provincially have lauched substantial initiatives over the last 5 years to address the growing number of female business owners including opportunities for grants, strategic planning assistance and funding options. There are countless networking and business groups available now as well as unlimited access to resources online.
What specific areas are you looking for assistance with? Perhaps I can direct you to a person or place.
Cheers!

Re: Businesswomen in the news
- Hey hey hey....Calm down. What you are forgetting and the press isnt taking into consideration the rise of entrepreneurship. Women arent leaving the workforce, they are starting their own workforces...
A few years ago I was president of the Canadian Association of Women Executives. I got a call from Global National who wanted a comment on the fact that women were leaving corporate Canada in droves....and what did I think about it......was it the glass ceiling etc..
Well, its because women are flocking to entrepreneurship but ladies, that doesnt make the news. the media is looking for information that will prove their 'the economy is in a slump'....
It simply isnt true. There are more women starting and running their own businesses than we've ever seen.
Dont forget that the media is out for the media and scare tactics and bad news gets the coverage....

Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight
- Hi Everyone,
Gosh, I REALLY appreciate your concrete feedback. This was far more than I expected and I'm glad you said what you thought straight out.
Each of you have shared something of value and I want to take some more time to think and really go over what each of you have said. However, I can see there are some things I need to change right away. What an interesting point about a NEW program perhaps making people think they are guinea pigs! This is NOT what I want to convey!
It's funny how we can see some things so clearly in others while not always seeing it for ourselves! I must admit there are a few things I've been meaning to change (like my bio which is very outdated). Obviously, these things need to be higher on my priority list. You caught me like the plumber who puts his clients first and doesn't get around to fixing his own tap!
As far as my target market, I do feel quite strongly about working with Women Leaders and doing Leadership Coaching with them. It's non-negotiable in my books. In my Executive Coaching training, the terms "Leaders" and "Executives" are interchangable. To me, an Executive is a Leader and so is the Business Woman or Entrepreneur who is CEO of her own business. I love working with decision makers!
What I did learn is that I need to avoid opening up the Leadership term beyond what I described above. I'm also wondering if there is a misunderstanding with the general public as to what Leadership Coaching really is.
Leadership Coaching is all about developing your leadership skills, both as a people manager and in more effectively running and growing the business. There is ALWAYS room for growth in some way. As well, sometimes, we just need a sounding board to clarify what our next BEST step is.
In fact, if a woman thinks she has nothing to work on, then we aren't a good Client/Coach fit anyway. How can she grow if she doesn't see the value of expressing ALL of the great ability within her? How can her company grow if she doesn't see the value of strategic planning for the next best level?
Thanks again to you all! I will go back to my website and really question whether I am conveying the right message.
I got more than I bargained for in this Spotlight... you generously offered way more than I was asking. I think we could be on to something great for the Forum.
Now it's time to let someone else have the spotlight. It would be great if everyone took a turn!
In gratitude,
Tami
