LIVE HAPPY HABITS – LIVE A HAPPY LIFE!
“Most people are about as happy as they
make up their minds to be!” – Abraham
Lincoln 1809-1865
This quote resonates with me
because it is the way I live my life.
When you look at the date that the quote was written, it is a great
reminder that ‘this is not new stuff’!
Happiness is a mindset. Happiness is a habit. My happiness is my personal
responsibility!
There are some great
‘happiness habits’ that I practice daily – some are easier to implement than
others – however, they all lead to a happy state of being! This is the only life I have – it’s not a
dress rehearsal – so it is important for me to live each day to its
fullest. When you get to my
(baby-boomer) stage of life, you realize it is all about the little things.
Know What I Want!
Each morning, I practice the
habit of identifying what I want the day to look like and to feel like. I take charge! When my children were teen-agers, it would
drive me nuts when their answer to just about every question was:
“whatever’! I consciously, and
constantly, decide the direction of my days and, therefore my life. “If it’s to be, it’s up to me’ (one of my
favorite quotes by Lou Tice). I decide
what I want for breakfast, what I will complete on my ‘to do’ list, how I will
relax in the evening and so on.
Ask for What I Want!
As a woman, this was a big
life lesson for me. I have always been
very generous in giving, in doing and in ‘being there’ for others. Now, since I am very clear on what I want in
my life, it’s become very easy for me to ask for what I want. I realize that I had been very selfish, in
the past, to NOT allow others to help me in the way I had been so avid about
wanting to help them. It’s a different
way of thinking. Most people want to
help. Let them! Then they, too, can experience the joy of
giving.
Eliminate Toxic People From My Life
Wow! This is a BIG one! Some people aren’t good for me. I make it a habit to surround myself only
with happy, loving, positive-thinking people.
Now, you may think that’s impossible to do. No, it’s not!
How important is your mental health and well being? I’ve been ‘on the other side’ – and allowed
toxic people to suck the life out of me.
No more! I surround myself with
love and my energy, because of that, is at an all time high – it’s a great
happiness habit!
Control my Self-Talk to Be Positive and UP-lifting!
Happiness is a mindset. It is contingent on how I speak to myself –
my self talk. In the past, if I had
friends who spoke to me the way I spoke to me, they wouldn’t be friends for
very long. I’ve learned to turn my
self-talk around and keep it positive and uplifting at all times! When you change your self-talk, you change
performance. I have a very happy life
because of this.
Lighten Up!
Life doesn’t have to be
difficult. We are so very serious these
days. For me, it is essential to find at
least one thing, each day, to be happy about – to laugh about – to smile
about. I make a conscious effort to do
this. Sometimes, it’s just a matter of
flashing a big kiss to someone in the car next to me when I am stopped at a red
light. I love watching the smiles I get
in return!
Put My Life on a Want-to, Choose-to, Like-it, Love-it
Basis
This is the most powerful
happiness habit that I practice. My
personal mission statement is to “come from truth”. In the past, as I mentioned above, I would
always ‘be there’ for everyone – and, later, often, I would resent the
commitment I made to do things or be places.
I was busy. I was tired. I became resentful. Once I adopted this practice of only saying
“YES” to the things that I really wanted to do, I eliminated all stress and
tension from my body and mind. This was
very freeing! I have been very happy,
balanced, sincere and much more fun to live with!
Practice Gratitude
While it is very important
for me, for my happiness, to create each and every day the way that I want it
to unfold (and I’m talking about those things over which I have control), it is
also essential for me to end my day with a mindset of gratitude. I keep a Gratitude Journal and, at the end of
each day – while enjoying my cup of peppermint tea – I write down 5 things for
which I am grateful. That alone creates
happy dreams for me because I live a blessed life!
Happiness is a mindset and a
habit. The beauty of this is that we are
in control of our thinking – and we have the power to live a happy life – one
habit at a time! Go for it. You’ll be happy you did!
