Managing your mind is the greatest safety asset you have!

“As human beings, we move towards and act like that which we think about!” – Lou Tice So, what are you thinking about? Did you stop to realize that your mindset is your greatest asset when it comes to safety!

Many years ago, I worked in Human Resources for a steel manufacturing company. Creating a mindset for safety in the culture was one very big challenge mainly because the majority of employees didn’t understand English! Production and profits outranked people and safety. It was at a time when recruiting qualified individuals was a major challenge, so anyone with a pulse and a willingness to work was hired.

Our accident rates were through the roof! Why? Because people didn’t have an effective means to communicate and implement safety. People weren’t thinking. People weren’t taught how to think effectively. People weren’t focused on safety results as a number one priority.

Safety starts with the way you think. And it starts at the level of every single person in the organization especially the leadership team. A mindset for safety is reflected in the culture of the company. I often heard the phrase, “Our people are our greatest asset but what I heard and what I experienced on my old steel days was incongruent.

Since then, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to work with leading research psychologists in the field of critical thinking. It’s all about mindset! Research psychologists show, in their studies, that there are 4 major barriers to human beings using their full potential – Habits, Attitudes, Beliefs and Expectations!

I experienced, firsthand, those 4 major (psychological) barriers to working in a safe environment.

· Poor safety habits on the job. This applies not only to employees but within the leadership team, with the incoming vendors, with suppliers and all those coming on site.

· Poor attitudes with respect to “it’s not my job; it’s not my responsibility; it’s not my company”!

· Core beliefs – “that will never happen to me”;

· Lack of expectations – there was not a high standard of expectation, or excellence, with respect to safety on the job!

In my experience, working as a coach, I have added 3 additional barriers: ego, emotion and control.

Technical training is, without a doubt, essential when working in the oil and gas industry. People who are technically trained on the job have core competencies and can produce results. One area that is neglected in training and development is the area of critical thinking – the art and mastery of staying mentally fit. To consider this a technical training initiative would be to provide a corporate culture that is pro-active when it comes to safety. A mindset for safety can be taught.

“If you keep doing what you’re doing, you’ll keep getting what you’re getting!” To think otherwise, is the definition of insanity.

So, what can you do to create a culture and a mindset for safety. It starts first with the way you think and the way you talk about safety. Our self-talk (that inner voice) helps to form our beliefs. When you change your self-talk to be positive, uplifting and forward thinking, you can change your beliefs. When you change beliefs, you change performance!

Individuals have self-talk. Teams have self-talk. Companies and organizations have self-talk. Organizations are nothing more than a network of conversations. Be aware, for a 24-hour period of your own self-talk and of the self-talk around you. What are people saying?

Is it positive? Is it ‘oh, ain’t it awful?” Is it creating the safety results you desire in the work place?

I have one simple exercise for changing one’s self talk. Remember, all meaningful and lasting change starts first on the inside…….it starts with YOU!

Take an elastic band and put it on your wrist. For a 24-hour period, you are not allowed any sarcasm, any teasing, any devaluation, any negativity to yourself or to anyone around you. Any time you find your self-talk turning negative; give that elastic band a little snap! The purpose of this exercise is to help you become aware of your own self-talkfor 24 hours! I believe, in my experience, that negative self-talk has become a habit. We’re good at it. The six o’clock news is good at it. We are programmed primarily in negativity and it doesn’t serve us!

The fact remains that, how we think and speak affects our attitude, our performance, our beliefs arout what’s possible, for our life, for our career, for our business.

One practice I had, in leading my teams, was an ‘elastic day’ at work, at least once a month (when I felt the self-talk was turning negative). It’s an awareness activity and habits take time to change. This is a powerful technique so don’t be telling yourself ‘this is silly’. It works!

Safety it’s all in the way you think. So, how’s your thinking? When our organizations create a culture of leadership and self awareness at the level of every single individual, then and only then will we create superior safe results.

Re: The greatest gold mine in the world Re: The greatest gold mine in the world - When I saw the title of this post, I immediately thought, "YOU are the greatest asset to be mined". Yes, our brain IS a gold mine, but even richer is the asset of YOU with your mind. I like to think of each of us having a genius to be unveiled. Your gifts and abilities, along with your mind, are brought to life by who you ARE. It is your sense of passion and purpose which will unveil the greatness within. When Shri mentioned thinking outside the box, it made me think of possibility. When we open up to possibility and bring our whole genius along for the ride, well, the sky is the limit! Let's use our minds and our hearts and see what incredible things can happen! Warm regards, Tami

Not only right employees are the greatest asset of any company, but also the set of tools to sync great talents between each other and help them to transcend their personal egos. Thank you for great post.
The Double Close/Escrow The Double Close/Escrow - Hello, I was in business for many years and have decided to buy another. Retirement isn't what it was cracked up to be. BITD if I needed a piece of equipment or bought another business I just put up 20 percent and the bank did the rest. I have been reading about another way however and hope some of you can fill in some blanks for me. What I am reading about is the double closing which uses a swing loan and an asset lender to purchase the assets of a business to use as the down payment. As below: 1.You arrange a swing loan for the down payment amount from the bank and give this to the seller. Supposedly after the paperwork this transfers title of the business and its assets to you. 2. In another room you have a second closing set up with a asset lender who loans you the amount of the swing loan which you use to pay off the swing loan. Now the asset based lender owns the assets as collateral for his loan and the seller is owner -financing the remaining balance. Now , I get a double escrow close in real estate circles but there are a couple of things about this business purchase situation that I don't understand. If the seller of the business is owner financing it and has the first lien what is his motivation to allow his assets to be used for collateral to the asset lender? Does the asset lender take a second lien on the asset loan he has just made( the down payment)? Or does it truly mean that during the first closing where the seller received the down payment that the right to do whatever I wanted with the assets was truly transferred to me and I can now give the asset lender a first lien position? This seems very strange to me but I continue to read about it in numerous places and the methodology never varies. Again, its been awhile since I did all this and we were much simpler back then. However, even then it took an act of God and Congress for any first lien holder to give up that position. Even for a very large down payment. Any help you guys and gals could give me would be greatly appreciated. All the Best!
Re: Invest in Real Estate or Stocks? Re: Invest in Real Estate or Stocks? - I agree with both David and Aneshia that your home is not an investment. Robert Kiyosaki defines and investment or asset as anything that brings money to you. Your home does not do this, it is an ongoing expense even if it is mortgage free, there are other expenses connected to it that are on an ongoing basis. A property that earns you an income is an asset. MichelleJ
Re: The greatest gold mine in the world Re: The greatest gold mine in the world - [quote="ideasuniversity":2gpyfxbp]The greatest gold mine in the world is not in South Africa, nor in Ghanna. It is not in the cementry either as someone said. The greatest gold mine in the world is between your two ears: your brain. Every ideas stem from our thinking. this is the reason we need to think more than before. Every block buster movie come from the brain. Every invetion and software ideas comes from the brain. Think for 1 hour on your project everyday for five days in a week and do it for a month and you will see how many ideas that will come out of it to make it better and better.[/quote:2gpyfxbp] The mind is a great tool to accomplish many things. I've always believed that the amount of creativity that we use also makes a large difference. I work with people who are creative and others who aren't - and there results differ from one another. Speaking of creativity, I've been amazed to find how many authors (who can be very creative in their books), but many show little to no creativity when they promote. Shri
