What Is Your Next Chapter?

We're never too young, or too old, to learn. In this day and age of technology, we have so many choices and access to so much information. The question I often ask myself is: "Are you really living your life?" "Somehow we learn who we really are and then live with that decision." - Eleanore Roosevelt

As I head into a new decade, I like to think ahead and ensure that I am, in fact, writing the 'next chapter' - rather than just letting life pass me by. It would be easy to just sit back and take what comes. But that's not my style. I am very enthused about life and, as an entrepreneur, I know that I am also a control freak!

One thing I know for sure is that we create our life from the inside out - it's all about the way we think. I tend to think in pictures so, for me, to create the next chapter, it is essential that I have the right pictures in place and all around me - thus, the need to put together a new Vision Board.

In addition, I am going to create a special list: "60 Things To Do Before I Turn 60!" So, let's go inside my head for a bit as I share what I'm thinking about for the next decade.

1. Turning 60 has got to be about Health. When you have your health, you have everything. There are some basic things you can do, at this stage in life, to ensure good health over the next many years. Some of the changes I am making include the elimination of white sugar - actually, white food altogether! It's not complicated because we have heard over and over again that the simple formula to good health is make good food choices, exercise, get 8-9 hours of sleep each night and minimize stress in your life.

2. Turning 60 has got to be about Family. I am very fortunate in that my mother is still alive. Many of you know my story in that I moved across the country a few years ago to start life over again (at age 55) - I now live near my 87-year old mother and have the opportunity to visit with her regularly. I love that. She has great stories to share and we never run out of things to talk about. Technology is also a blessing in that my grand-daughter now has an e-mail account and we get to communicate regularly, and in a way that is special for just the two of us. Be sure to keep family close, communicate with them regularly and ensure that 'what needs to be said" - gets said!

3. Turning 60 has got to be about Gratitude. Meister Eckhart once wrote that "If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you, it will be enough." For 14 years now, ever since Oprah introduced the "Gratitude Journal" on her show, in an interview with Sarah Ban Breathnach, I have kept a gratitude journal. It has changed my life. People, in general, have a habit of always finding the negative in life. Once you adopt the habit of keeping a gratitude journal, and writing down 5 things each day for which you are grateful, it totally changes your perspective in life. Start one today and you will see the difference it will make in your own life.

4. Turning 60 has got to be about Goal-Setting. I had dinner with a friend in Toronto recently and she will be celebrating her 75th birthday this fall. She was telling me about conversations with her son in which he is always encouraging her to set new goals - so that she, too, lives life with purpose each and every day. What an inspiration. Don't 'settle for less' - give it all you've got. Goals can be very small (e.g. what you're having for dinner tonight) or larger than life (my 60th birthday celebration will be a month at a villa in Spain). Goals make life more meaningful and more interesting.

5. Turning 60 has got to be about Laughter. Look around you - how many people can be seen laughing these days? Laughter is good medicine. We make life too complicated and there's really no need for that. Keep things simple and laugh more. It's important to be able to laugh at ourselves - start right there.

While this article has focused on turning 60 - you can substitute any number. The only thing getting in the way of your living your best life is YOU!

YOUR ASSIGNMENT

1. Start a new tradition and create your own Vision Board this month, for the remainder of the year.

2. Along with that, create a fun list of goals - keep life simple for now.

3. Laugh more, and start today.

Put some of these basics in place and I guarantee you will not only grow personally, but your business practices will also improve. When you develop new skills, you are developing the confidence and courage to move forward and invent the life, and the business, you truly want. You will be much more comfortable and successful in the overall scheme of things.

3 Networking Questions 3 Networking Questions - Hi Everyone, I was reading Jeffrey Gitomer's "Little Black Book of Connections" and there were a number of key points that I needed clarification on (*please note that you don't need to read the book to answer these questions): 1.) In Chapter 4, Jeffrey Gitomer says "If you're trying to connect at a social event, DON'T drink. Any connection you attempt while somewhat tipsy will leave the worst possible impression. If you're going to drink, maybe the best thing to do is carry your competition's card, and give them away" (100), but my question is "What if everyone else there is drinking?" Personally, I rarely even drink socially, but wouldn't it be considered rude to not at least have one drink in order to be deemed a "team player"? Or is Gitomer only warning against getting hammered? 2.) Moreover, on page 114 Gitomer states that the best way to connect with others is to ask for their opinions, ideas or feedback. But what should one do if the other person you're trying to connect with has also read this book (or is a naturally great connector) and is deliberately limiting his/her responses or simply firing questions back? How can you connect with someone who won't allow you to play on his/her ego? 3.) Lastly, on page 117 Gitomer recommends that people should start with a question rather than a statement when trying to connect, but then in Chapter 6, he also suggests giving "your 30-second personal commercial and then ask what he or she does" (153). So should one start with a question OR his/her 30-second personal commercial when trying to connect with someone new? Or is it really just dependent on the situation? Any light someone can shed on the questions above would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
Delivering True Value Delivering True Value - I've only just recently started to dwell on the concept of "Value". It's a word I've taken for granted in the English language and not spent time to understand it's meaning. Maybe through the law of attraction I came across a download of "Science of Getting Rich" and the definition of Value came about in Chapter 6: How Riches Come to You. Here are the two paragraphs that clarified it for me: [quote:2ax6tvj9]"You do not have to get something for nothing, [i:2ax6tvj9]but can give to every person more than you take from him.[/i:2ax6tvj9]"[/quote:2ax6tvj9] [quote:2ax6tvj9]"When you rise from the competitive to the creative plane, you can scan your business transactions very strictly, and if you are selling any person anything which does not add more to his life than the thing he give you in exchange, you can afford to stop it. You do not have to beat anybody in business. and if you are in business which does beat people, get out of it at once. Give everyone more in [i:2ax6tvj9]use value[/i:2ax6tvj9] than you take from him in [i:2ax6tvj9]cash value[/i:2ax6tvj9]. Then you are adding to the life of the world by every business transaction."[/quote:2ax6tvj9] If you read the 4 page chapter your will understand that adding value does not have to be in monetary terms. In this day and age information (use value) if tailored to a partners needs that they can act on has tremendous Value.
Focus Brings Long Term Results Focus Brings Long Term Results - Over the past 2 years of venturing out and running my own business and not working full-time in a job I have tried numerous business opportunities. I have tried businesses in providing student accommodation, share trading and options, renting and selling paddles to dragon boat clubs and selling toilet odour eliminator products online. This was opportunistic thinking and diminished my efforts as I got started by adding more work rather than focusing on one business. It was all very tempting to try and run them at the same time to see which one would take off. Unfortunately there was no focus and when times got tough I jumped across to work on the business that interested me more. Opportunistic Thinking Is Bad If you are like me and see that everything is possible and always keeping an open mind about business ideas, then you will find it irresistible to try new ideas. Trust me I’ve learnt the hard way. So how have I changed this? I’m a huge fan of Yaro Starak’s blog - entrepreneurs-journey.com and one day he wrote a post about his coach Rich Schefren who was launching a new coaching program. As usual most internet marketers have a system to launch their new products and give away a lot of free quality information that can be applied straight away. They do this so they can build rapport with you and show that their information is useful before they start their sales pitch on you. As I knew the information was free and they just wanted my email address, I downloaded Rich’s eBook, the “Internet Manifesto“. If you haven’t read it, I would recommend you get a copy of it immediately. The Change in Mindset After reading the “Internet Manifesto”, I had a profound moment that I would change the way I operate my business. My mindset went from “thinking opportunistic” to “thinking strategically” meaning if I wanted to build a long term business I would have to set up the right systems and hire staff to leverage my time. I realised that I couldn’t do everything myself. Rich’s famous flowchart accurately shows how most Solo Enterpreneurs run their Internet Businesseses today. (I’m one of them and have taken action to outsource a lot of my work since then) Rich Schefren's Internet Manifesto Since then I have taken action to sell my businesses that are not part of my goals and made a mental decision to not start new business opportunities. Focus Is Key Since I was compelled to find out more, I downloaded the rest of Rich’s series of books which are listed below: 1. Internet Manifesto 2. The Missing Chapter 3. The Final Chapter 4. Attention Age Doctrine Part 2 5. Maven Matrix Manifesto 6. The Entrepreneurial Emergency Through this series I learned that I needed to focus on one task at a time, not five at a time (today’s generation calls it multi-tasking). Making that shift helped me improve time efficiency and also get tasks completed that generated more money. Additionally, you need to use your strengths to focus on a task and learn to outsource the rest that you are not good at. This is the key to long-term success in any business. Pitch Like A Girl: How a Woman Can Be Herself and Still Succ Pitch Like A Girl: How a Woman Can Be Herself and Still Succ - Pitch Like A Girl: How a Woman Can Be Herself and Still Succeed Ronna Lichtenberg 2005 From the inside cover: "As a woman, you probably feel uncomfortable when it comes to promoting yourself and asking for what you want." WHAT IN THE HECK IS THIS, I asked myself when I read that. Women are the fastest growing business owners in the US and Canada, there are t housands of women executives and CEOs - though not as many as might be expected, admittedly, yet the book opens with this surely out of date stereotype. However, as she continued to give examples of women who had high paying jobs but were routinely not paid as much as men because it hadn't occurred to them to ask for raises, etc., I decided it was probably true for a majority of businesswomen... Anyway, more of the info from the jacket: "Other books have told you how to get what you want by being more like a guy. Make millions with this software Make millions with this software - I am starting a new thread with this email, I received from Mike Dillard a few months ago. Though I have posted it as a reply to a thread, but I believe it will be good to post it as new because Earl Nightingale used it. Napoleon Hills used it, Andrew Carnegie used it and it is your free of charge. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ So as promised, I’m going to reveal the secret weapon I use on a daily basis to achieve incredible results in business. It’s a piece of software that has built my entire little empire brick-by-brick, day-by-day… It’s not DeamWeaver, Outlook, Front Page, 1ShoppingCart, or an auto-responder. No… I’m afraid to say that it’s just as lame, and yet just as important as the secret I revealed yesterday. When I look out across this industry and throughout the community members at MagneticSponsoring.com, I see two kinds of people… Those who have made “execution” a daily habit, and those who have not. Here's what I mean by that... Many close friends and associates have noticed that I’ve acquired one particular trait over the years which has enabled me to achieve some incredible things. It’s not that I’m smarter than anyone else, or that I’ve had better opportunities, or that I’ve had more money to start with, (which was definitively not the case). They all say it comes down to one thing… “Mike, what makes you different than everyone else out there is that once you have an idea, you actually sit down and do it”. To be honest, that never really occurred to me, and it made me stop and really think. I just took it for granted that if you have a great idea, you freaking do it right? But most people don’t. They have an incredible idea and think about doing it. Day’s go by. Weeks go by. Months go by. Before they realize it, they’re still sitting in the same position they were a year before. I don’t think about things, I do them. I have an idea and I execute that idea one little step at a time each and every day until the project is complete. Success is not a destination, it’s the result of a pattern of habitual behaviors. That’s why you can take someone who’s had a track record in one field, and move them to another with the expectation that success will be achieved again. It’s not the job, the business opportunity, the new marketing system, or the product that resulted in their success… It was their daily habits. They were “do-ers”. There are successful people and unsuccessful people in every company – all using the same tools, the same websites, and the same system. The difference is found in their daily habits. So how you can you transition from a “thinker”, to a “do-er”? Well that’s where my little secret software weapon comes into play. This little gem has been crucial in creating my habitual pattern of getting things done, producing millions in revenue in the process. It’s called “WordPad”. Also known as NotePad or TextEdit for Mac users, it’s that little program that opens up to a blank white page and just stares at you with a blinking cursor at the top. You write text in it. That’s all. It doesn’t do anything what-so-ever, or even check your spelling. Yes I know… Another big let down just like yesterday right? Well here’s why this program is so valuable to you… It’s your new boss. Every night before I go to bed, I pull up my Word Pad file which I save as “To-Do.txt”, and I write down five tasks that I must complete the following day in order of importance. For example, here’s my actual “To Do List” for today: To Do List: 1: Write and send MS newsletter. 2: Update Adwords campaign. 3: Run new headline split-test. 4: Finish Chapter 4 in “Building On A Budget”. 5: Return prospect phone calls and emails. 6: Read a book. Now here’s what’s so magical about this process… If you make your list the night before, you’ll subconscious will have all night to think about it. The moment you wake up, you’re on task. You already know what your goals for the day are. You’re focused, and by starting your day with this focus and this purpose that’s already laid out for you, it allows you to ignore the onslaught of distractions that come with each new morning. You’ll find that if you don’t have your To-Do List waiting for you in the morning, that you’ll get side-tracked immediately. Life happens. It gets in the way. And unless you take back that control and focus, it will prevent you from accomplishing anything. This is the deadly trap you must avoid at all costs that's preventing you from achieving the results you want. Above all other things, this little process of creating my To-Do List each night using nothing more than Word Pad, as allowed me to create the Magnetic Sponsoring empire. That massive new community site we have with over 14,000 pages of content was created one step at a time by my little Word Pad file. The new Magnetic Sponsoring 3.0 System? Yep… Created by Word Pad. It’s the most powerful piece of software in the world. And here’s my challenge to you… Make a commitment to use my method for 30 days, starting tonight. Before you go to bed, make your list of 5 tasks that you MUST complete by the end of the next day. They must be actions “tasks”, not goals. If you do the tasks, your goals will be accomplished automatically. Don’t put… 1: Sponsor a new rep 2: Get a new customer 3: Read a book 4: Etc… If sponsoring a new rep or getting a new customer is the goal, focus on the tasks that will result in that goal like producing 20 new leads, and contacting previous prospects. 1: Send out a press release. 2: Send a newsletter to my list. 3: Add 3 new AdGroups to my PPC campaign. 4: Talk to at least 5 prospects. 5: Read Chapter 3 in “MLMTrafficFormula” If you do this without fail for 30 days, you’ll be a completely different person, and you’ll have made more progress in one month, than you have in the past 12. Hey… I just had an idea… I’m going to set up a forum post for this and name it the “30 Day Challenge”. As you adopt this new pattern of habits, post your progress on the forum and share your results! Thank you for your leadership, Mike Dillard
