We all have fears. We all have weaknesses. We all struggle at times. Despite all this, we all can succeed. We should all have BIG dreams. We all should live the life which we have always dreamed. It's been often said that we are born with two fears - the fear of falling and the fear of a loud noise. All other fears we acquire as we experience life. What is the number one fear people have? It's not the fear of heights, the fear of rejection or the fear of AIDS - it's the fear of public speaking. First only to the fear of dying. It kind of makes you wonder if the person giving the eulogy is wishing they were in the box.
Fears are the result of not having faith; not having confidence. Faith and fear cannot exist in the same room at the same time. Before we tackle the gambit of fears, let's offer a solution to the number one fear - the fear of public speaking. This fear is almost always due to not being prepared or not having confidence. Much of this fear can be overcome with practice, practice, practice.
OK - we now have helped solved fear number one. But Richard, what about everything else? Let's start at the beginning. Everyone has to have a game plan on how their lives are to lived. It all starts with a dream; then established goals; that require action; that will produce results. It requires us to face our fears, then plow ahead and ignore those very fears that are trying to stop us. As we conquer our fears we grow, we get stronger. How do you do this? It's not easy but, on the other hand, it's not hard either. I advise many of my clients that there are 10 key points. They are:
- 1. Dream BIG!! Let your mind ignore ALL fears and dream of what you want in life. Dream of your passion.
- 2. Set goals to help you accomplish and reach your dreams. Write them down!
- 3. Take action. Dreaming and planning are great, but that alone isn't enough. You need to get momentum and take the steps needed and ignore all fear. Just do it!!
- 4. Slow down. Reflect each day on what you have accomplished and celebrate small victories. Reflect on what you want.
- 5. Keep your life in balance. Too much work will mess up your home life and too much home life will mess up work. (Personal note: Keep your spiritual life in balance too.)
- 6. Don't try to do it alone. We all need help. Don't be too proud and be a one man wrecking crew. I was for years and it held me back. Most of all find cheerleaders that will celebrate and support all you do.
- 7. Embrace change! These are the times of change - politically and economically. Those that thrive and not just survive, have a mindset of change.
- 8. Sharpen your saw. Read, attend classes and seminars, listen to CD's, watch educational DVD's and then read some more. Books alone can train you and your mind for just about everything. Keep growing!
- 9. Have gratitude. Give thanks for all you have. Take time to reflect on your blessings and your successes. Take NOTHING for granted.
- 10. Give back to the community and the world. Many people feel this is part of gratitude. To a certain extent - I agree; however, building and leaving your legacy will always need extra focus.
Shoot for the moon - and even if you miss, you'll land among the stars!
