Leadership and Communication by Ology Coaching

Article Overview: Organisation structures have changed in the last few decades and I believe this has had a detrimental effect on the way organisations are managed and lead. A few decades ago organisations had many levels of management in their structures and people progressed through the ranks in incremental steps of authority learning management skills along the way. People learned to be managers by attending training courses and by observing and copying the behaviour of other managers in the structure. A percentage of these other managers would be displaying the behaviours and attitudes of leadership and so leadership could be observed and learnt.

Leadership and Communication - Some Thoughts Organisation structures have changed in the last few decades and I believe this has had a detrimental effect on the way organisations are managed and lead.

Can people learn to be a leader? I believe this depends on the individual because not everyone wants to lead, but for those who do want to lead there are some behaviours they can learn and foster in themselves.

My observation of the difference between leadership and management is that while some of the activities and skills are the same, managers rely on their authority to get things done whereas leaders attract followers who chose to be involved in achieving the leader's vision.

Leaders develop a vision of the future state and communicate this vision with the passion of their belief and their determination to achieve the vision. If a leaders vision is believable to others and if the leader lives the vision and demonstrates behaviours that are aligned with their vision, then others will begin to share that vision. Those who come to share the vision willingly undertake the tasks required to move the organisation in the direction of the vision. Leaders use their communication and management skills to support and encourage their followers' efforts.

This application of a combination of leadership behaviours and management skills creates what I think of as "pull", a state where leaders pull followers into the direction that they are moving, towards the goals that will lead to the achievement of their vision.

Most managers know how to plan and organise people but what are these leadership behaviours that create "pull"?

Firstly the leader must have a direction and be able to verbalise that direction fluently and with belief and passion. Above all the leader must demonstrate behaviours that make them worthy of their followers, integrity, honesty, humility, courage, commitment, sincerity, confidence, optimism, wisdom, determination, compassion, and sensitivity.

Becoming a leader is more difficult for many of us than being a manager, but for those who make the effort and achieve leadership the rewards are great. For those who want a demonstration of the difference between "push" and "pull", take a piece of rope about two meters long and hold one end with the other end on the floor. Try to push the rope in any direction it will not easily move to where you want it to go; if you "pull" the rope it will follow you anywhere.

Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight - Hi Everyone, Gosh, I REALLY appreciate your concrete feedback. This was far more than I expected and I'm glad you said what you thought straight out. Each of you have shared something of value and I want to take some more time to think and really go over what each of you have said. However, I can see there are some things I need to change right away. What an interesting point about a NEW program perhaps making people think they are guinea pigs! This is NOT what I want to convey! It's funny how we can see some things so clearly in others while not always seeing it for ourselves! I must admit there are a few things I've been meaning to change (like my bio which is very outdated). Obviously, these things need to be higher on my priority list. You caught me like the plumber who puts his clients first and doesn't get around to fixing his own tap! As far as my target market, I do feel quite strongly about working with Women Leaders and doing Leadership Coaching with them. It's non-negotiable in my books. In my Executive Coaching training, the terms "Leaders" and "Executives" are interchangable. To me, an Executive is a Leader and so is the Business Woman or Entrepreneur who is CEO of her own business. I love working with decision makers! What I did learn is that I need to avoid opening up the Leadership term beyond what I described above. I'm also wondering if there is a misunderstanding with the general public as to what Leadership Coaching really is. Leadership Coaching is all about developing your leadership skills, both as a people manager and in more effectively running and growing the business. There is ALWAYS room for growth in some way. As well, sometimes, we just need a sounding board to clarify what our next BEST step is. In fact, if a woman thinks she has nothing to work on, then we aren't a good Client/Coach fit anyway. How can she grow if she doesn't see the value of expressing ALL of the great ability within her? How can her company grow if she doesn't see the value of strategic planning for the next best level? Thanks again to you all! I will go back to my website and really question whether I am conveying the right message. I got more than I bargained for in this Spotlight... you generously offered way more than I was asking. I think we could be on to something great for the Forum. Now it's time to let someone else have the spotlight. It would be great if everyone took a turn! In gratitude, Tami

Business Coaching Internship Review Business Coaching Internship Review - I joined in during the first phase of the internship and at this point we are committed to doing research and development of RSC Business Group operating in Toronto. RSC Business Group already has products and services in Coaching Small businesses in Los Angeles but we didn't want to assume that the same products were wanted and needed in the Toronto market. Our goal at this point is to commit to interviewing 1000 business owners to capture this data. Through the teleconference internship I've been involved in we've been focusing on Communication Skills and on active listening which are practiced when we conduct our interviews and Coach our clients when they come on board. This is a lot harder than it sounds! Part of the internship is also creating the Toronto RSC Business Group's departments, job descriptions, Marketing and Communication plans etc that a business owner would create for their own company. This trains us in the way we would coach a company as well. The internship is phased in two parts and there is compensation plan involved as well for the clients you personally bring in. These clients are coached directly by Robert Chun as you begin but you are given a chance to learn his techniques. I haven't gone through this experience yet though. It's hard to explain Robert Chun's method of Coaching as it happens at a psychological level in his ability to listen and question the person being coached into the next steps they need to take. The Teleconferences are 2 hours long but it's very interactive. If you have a desire to explore this area of Business I'd recommend contacting Vwodek listed above and get invited to a Coaching Conference call. You can decided then if it's for you. Note: it is a commitment but the skills you walk away with whether you plan on working with RSC Business Group or not is invaluable.
Why A Project Fails? Why A Project Fails? - Hello Everyone As the size and complexity of ones business grows, so does their need to effectively manage projects. I have been thinking about the major reasons why a project can go wrong and my limited experience comes up with the following. 1 Leadership: A project manager with leadership skills and not just management skills. 2 Failure to (Foresee and) Plan 3 Failure to Manage: Ineffective change management control methods. Unclear decision making guidelines. 4 Talent: Finding, allocating and developing people 5 Scope: Setting an overly ambitious or amibigious project scope 6 Alignment: When projects are not prioritized in alignment with the business strategy, or project members personal objectives are not in tandem with that of the project / company 7 Lack of Candor: Communication Breakdowns I would be interested in knowing everyone's thoughts on this, especially on ways to overcome the above mentioned obstacles. Cheers!
