When to Press Your Printing Needs

When to Press Your Printing Needs

Not so long ago, your options for printing your organization's brochures and related materials were limited — you either went to a high volume (high cost) commercial press, or you tried to make do with a low quality office printer. Either way, you compromised on cost or quality. Today, however, you have numerous printing options to choose from. Knowing what's available and the benefits and drawbacks of each option can help you choose a printing process that suits your budget and your quality demands. You can use a different process for different types of materials — here's a quick summary of options:

Four-Color Press (or Process Color) – the best and most versatile option when you need high volume and high quality.

Spot Color Press – the least expensive option when you need higher volume and fewer than four colors, but this process may or may not provide reasonable quality (depends on the quality of the press—ask your printer for samples).

Color Laser Printer – the best choice when you need very good quality and low quantities. (Most printers offer this option and many offices now have their own color laser printers.)

Color Photocopier – when low to acceptable quality will do, and for low volumes only. Color laser printer is usually a better option. For high volumes, investigate spot color press.

Inkjet Printer – when moderate quality will do, for minimal quantities. Using higher quality paper can improve quality somewhat but color laser is usually a better option.

It is also important to note that the design of the print piece itself is an important factor in the resulting quality. An experienced designer will match your needs to your budget.
