All in the Minds Eye

Article Overview: I was laying on the top deck of a luxury liner, on a sun bed big enough for a family, with the warmth of the sun making my body feel relaxed (mind you it was aided by the odd vino or two!!), trying to read a book, but the lids on my eyes had a mind of their own. As I was drifting off to that world that is not quite asleep but neither quite conscious, a great feeling of contentment and wellbeing came over me, how lucky am I….what a great place I live in……my work is a dream-so enjoyable…..great friends and romance.

All in the Minds Eye
I was laying on the top deck
of a luxury liner, on a sun bed big enough for a family, with the warmth of the sun making
my body feel relaxed (mind you it was aided by the odd vino or two!!), trying
to read a book, but the lids on my eyes had a mind of their own. As I was
drifting off to that world that is not quite asleep but neither quite
conscious, a great feeling of contentment and wellbeing came over me, how lucky am I….what a great place I live
in……my work is a dream-so enjoyable…..great friends and romance.
It has been a long time since I had a real
holiday but at this very moment I knew all was well with me and the
world…….shame reality has to burst the bubble as somebody plopped them self on
the edge of the bed and started talking to me; a real struggle to pull myself
back to normality and even attempt anything like a coherent conversation, but I
did!!(shame) This “twilight area” is a
link into our subconscious, lowering barriers and it lets us have a glimpse of
ourselves without limits.
This whole environment was
new to me, my 1st cruise, and I am not known for my social
abilities, I usually prefer the company of a few close friends rather than a
large number of strangers, so me and 2,900 strangers (ok 2,899, I knew 1 person
on the whole ship!) was a huge gamble, but this was also a good learning place
for me as well. Nobody knew me as me, so
really I could be anybody or anything I wanted to be, my only limits were those
that I chose to keep. The reason we keep
our limits or boundaries are so we know ourselves. We know who we are;
experience and life have shown us that!!!!
We programme ourselves to behave or react like we know we are, and then
on any occasion that we act or achieve something that is “not like me”, our
powerful sub-conscious mind flexes its muscles and makes up do something, or
say something to put us back to where we know we should be…..
Many times we think to
ourselves “I wish I could do this, or that differently”, but we hold a picture
in our own imagination and until we change that picture our behaviour cannot
and will not change. The job of our subconscious mind is to keep us sane, and
comfortable. This is also known as
keeping us in our comfort zone; the further you can stretch your comfort zone
the more you can do. Extreme cases of
tiny comfort zones are phobias, these can be mentally and physically
debilitating and painful when confronted; but can be conquered.
So, here I was faced with one
of my “uncomfortable zones”, so many strangers in a confined space……how did I
do? Well……taking each part of the day
and night at a time, and enjoying new company, when I started to feel overwhelmed,
I took a walk on the deck, cleared my head, breathed deeply and concentrated on
the new picture I had made in my head of me, meeting and greeting new people
easily, whilst feeling relaxed. As the
week went on, my picture grew stronger and my anxiousness reduced, so now I can
say I had a wonderful time, with great people and some new amazing friends from
far flung places in the world; which is so good, I can now start planning my
next holiday to visit these people and meet even more.
What picture can you change
in your own mind to make your life better, more comfortable, easier???? The
great thing about this is everybody can do it, it just takes a little practice,
but even that gets easier!!!!!!
