Article Overview: We find as we travel through life’s highways and byways that the unexpected usually happens, but through this we learn about ourselves and our own strengths, when life is good and calm we tend to take this for granted rather than thinking of it as part of the overall journey. We have a tendency to expect life to be good and when it is not, the question we ask ourselves is very often ”why me?” and the longer we dwell on it, the longer it seems to last. Learning to take the lessons out of life and believe that we are learning and growing as a person, helps to make these situations much easier to bear.

Beliefs
We
find as we travel through life’s highways and byways that the unexpected
usually happens, but through this we learn about ourselves and our own
strengths, when life is good and calm we tend to take this for granted rather
than thinking of it as part of the overall journey. We have a tendency to expect life to be good
and when it is not, the question we ask ourselves is very often ”why me?” and
the longer we dwell on it, the longer it seems to last. Learning to take the lessons out of life and
believe that we are learning and growing as a person, helps to make these
situations much easier to bear.
Belief
is a major part of life, our beliefs are created by our parents, schooling,
friends, TV, films etc anything or anybody who touches our lives. As we have experiences in life, we form
thoughts and then beliefs. These beliefs
can be helpful or not, but as long as we believe them – they are right! And
many arguments, fights and wars are fought over beliefs (not just religious
ones).
Just
like Johnny (aged 6) is ready to “batter”
Peter (aged 10) because Peter says Johnny’s mum is stupid. But in
reality how important is Peter’s view of Johnny’s mum? What is really going to
happen because Peter says this? Probably
nothing, but for Johnny his world seems threatened, as we get older our beliefs
don’t get any more logical (unless we work at it).
Choosing
what we think and looking at our beliefs to see if they actually help us may seem
like a lot of work and it can be, as we have around 60,000 thoughts a day!
Checking all of them we would not have time to do anything else, so learning to
listen internally to our feelings is much easier, feeling happy, contented, and
bubbly usually shows that things around us fit in with our belief of how things
should be, feeling sad, angry, or guilty usually fit situations where we
believe things should be different. That
is when we can learn to change, proactively to make the situation different, or
our beliefs.
Over
the years we have learnt many new things, and skills, changing an unhelpful
belief is just the same, it does take courage, determination and
perseverance. But the improvement in our
own life, or that of people who are around us is a great reward and just like
everything, a habit because it can be learnt, so it can be unlearnt or
replaced.
I
am not saying that we can all be 100% happy all of the time, but we can choose
to deal with times in our lives that are “not ideal” in a way that causes us
less emotional hurt and discomfort. How
outdated are some of our beliefs? Why do we hang onto them even when we know
they are not making us happy? If we are not happy and contented internally,
then externally we are usually pretty hard to be with.
It
is never too late or too soon to start to take a look at your beliefs and how
they are affecting your life, and then choosing to do something about
them. One thing is for sure, the more
you do it, the easier it gets and the easier it gets the more you want to look
at yourself and your beliefs, attitudes and way of life.
Learning
to live your life on a basis that brings happiness to you and those around you
can then only make the world a better place.
