Dust off Your Goals, Air Your Dreams

Recently I was going through some old boxes in my garage and came across one of my first courses that I did in psychology, which was the one that turned a corner in my life. As you can imagine that was a few (well ok many) years ago. As I sat on the floor with papers and bits all around me, I started reading what I had written about my dreams, hopes, worries and life at the time.

To my amazement many of the things I had written then were exactly where I am now, with maybe the exception of my Prince Charming (but I am working on that!). I had not thought of these papers in years and had it not been for (a very brave) somebody suggesting that I was a hoarder any maybe getting rid of the rubbish (as they saw it, to ,me they were hours of blood, sweat, tears and many long nights studying & writing) that I had lugged around from house to house and now country to country, that was just collecting dust, may be better dumped, I would not have looked at them now either!

Seeing what my expectations were back then and where I am now, was quite a shock. Had I then kept that in my mind all this time? Was it just coincidence? Had all of what I have been through in the intervening years been a means to get where I wanted to be all along and learn a few lessons on the way? As I sat there and pondered, recollections of where I was then flooded back; a lone parent of a toddler, financially strapped and emotionally wrung out after a very messy marriage breakdown, but from somewhere I found a new path and the strength to walk down it. At that time I felt very alone and very vulnerable, as many people do when they have been part of “a couple” for years; the future was daunting to say the least.

We (my daughter then under two and I) had left Spain with what we stood up in and My parents were my only anchor at the time; though loving and supportive my dad was very staunch in his views, he would babysit for me to go to work but not to go out, as he believed “ I had responsibilities”. My head and my heart were in tatters, but then I met a lecturer at a local college that was who open my eyes and my mind, Richard Dunhill opened up the wonderful world of the brain and human potential in a 10min presentation that was to change my way of life, beliefs and open up a new world of possibilities, that I never considered before. I enrolled on the course there and then, went away enthused until my old self started to question my own ability!!!

I did make the1st class of the course, but felt overwhelmed and totally inadequate, as people started to introduce themselves there were Drs, Lawyers, Judges, Police Chiefs and me!!! (many of these in the following years would call me in to help their investigations, or their clients-but I would never have believed that at the time). As the course progressed I grew more confident and able, in fact felt I had come home, this was totally for me and it was not hard work like school or college (until the time of waiting for the grades!!!). When I finally graduated with Honors and asked my now friend Richard, why on that day many moons before he had enrolled me on this course, he said that his job was not just to teach but to see potential and develop it. He could see something in me that I could not see or believed that I could ever do. This is something that has remained with me ever since.

The potential of human beings even with all this new technology cannot be measured, so we should assume that we have loads of it, but sometimes we just need the encouragement of somebody else with a little vision.

Self belief even in times of hardship and heartache offer ways that we can learn and gain from the experiences, having somebody there to encourage, even if you cannot believe them can be just enough to open a new door, or be the light at the end of a dark tunnel. We should not be afraid to dream or have goals, not losing sight of them or take them for granted. Sitting on the garage floor, had opened up a new set of goals and dreams for me, but these one I have no intention of putting into boxes and letting them get covered in dust. They will be nurtured and worked on everyday, then I am sure they will be achieved a lot quicker and I can enjoy the journey of achievement as well.

Re: Drop out Billionaire Re: Drop out Billionaire - Hi there, What an amazing man. He also had a good woman behind him in the early years. Like Orxan said, get his book. We all can learn something from him. I am sure that nobody would could say, 'Oh, I know it all'. Often we have heard: Dust yourself down, pick yourself up and get going again. Bill Bartman must have experienced that many times. Can you get that book in England? What is the title 'orxan' refers to? Let us all say: I got it, I can do whatever I need to do to get to the Top.

Treasure Hunt: Inside the Mind of the New Consumer Treasure Hunt: Inside the Mind of the New Consumer - Treasure Hunt: Inside the Mind of the New Consumer Michael J. Silverstein 2006 From the inside jacket: "Today's consumers can seem impossible to understand, and even harder to please. For instance, the average mall shopper will spend about $100, then leave when she hits that limit. SHe'll probably buy shoes rather than clothing, because she doesn't want to think about her dress size. And the store most likely to get her money isn't the one with the nicest display or the deepest discounts - it's the one closest to her parking spot." Okay, ladies here at evancarmichael.com? Do you follow this generalization? I myself go to bookstores, and nowhere else. Being self-employed in a home office, I don't need to buy new clothes, but I confess I did buy a new pair of bike shoes recently... The Introduction states: "This book tells the story of how middle-class consumers around the world are reshaping the consumer-goods market by trading down to low-price products and services, trading up to premium ones, and avoiding the boredom and low value that increasingly characterizes the middle. These consumers, mostly women, are better educated, have more disposable income, and are buying with more sophistication than ever." Table of Contents 1. The Bifurcating Market 2.
