How many decisions do you make a day? It’s something that few of us rarely think about. But in fact, life is made up of decisions, small and large. How well you make your decisions, or not even making a decision at all, can greatly affect your life. The ability to make good decisions is the hallmark of the successful person. Good decision making helps you achieve your goals and avoid mistakes. You can live out your dreams when you are able to make sound decisions and act upon them.

Each of us tends to have a certain style of decision making. Take a glance at the list and see where you fit in:

Impulsive: you go for the first choice presented to you

Fatalistic: if something is meant to happen – it will, it’s fate.

Compliant: you go along with the crowd or someone else’s opinion.

Delaying: you need more time, or you’ll think about it later.

Agonizing: you feel overwhelmed, and can’t make your mind up.

,

Balancing: you weigh all the factors, and then go ahead.

Of course the ideal method is the last, “Balancing”. A very simple tool to help you do just that is something called Benjamin Franklin’s Balance Sheet, & yes, it is something that he came up with to help him make good decisions. It is very simple, take a sheet of blank paper draw a line down the middle & write all the pros one side of the line and all the cons the other side for whatever you are considering. You then refine it and assign a “weight or value” according to importance of +0 - +10 points against each point on the pro side, & -0 - -10 against each item on the cons side and add them up. You’ll quickly see the benefits of either side, and your decision will then almost make itself. It does seem a little long winded, but do you remember leaning to ride a bike or tie a shoe lace? How many times did you try until it got – easy! The same goes for this the more you do it, the quicker and easier it becomes, until you can almost do it automatically – though that is not to say when you have mastered it you will not make mistakes. Choosing the time and place to make a decision can influence the outcome, if you are very emotional, or alcohol fuelled; our logic system is often dysfunctional and very often leads to regret, but even then you often have a good idea that are other choices to be made. Plus we are human.

The most important thing is that we do actually make decisions, by leaving things to fate or other people our life can slowly slip past us, leaving us to think “where did all that time go?” Making decisions however small to start with, is empowering. Which in turn makes us want to do more and try more; which is great as there is a huge, wide world out there, just waiting for your decision to conquer it, or not as the case may be!

Re: Secret Success of the Coin Toss Re: Secret Success of the Coin Toss - Pro-athletes are masters of making split decisions. They don't have a lot of time to think, but they are forced to make a play. And, they practice all year long to make the one catch, one shot, one goal, one hit.... Their effort, hours and hours of effort get finally rewarded during these moments. Kind of the professional athletes. I think we can all be diligent in our professions and it will lead us to know what to do and say when we must make tough and hard decisions. All of the sudden, we'll even know which side of the coin it'll flip to.
Re: Advice Wanted Re: Advice Wanted -

I keep saying this but I have to say it again. I dont like partnerships. Any family money should be a know donation to you before hand. Borrowing from family is one of the worst most stressful things you can do. I would have to know more to give any real advice but be careful with partners. If you do decide to take on a partner make sure you get a good business attorney.[/quote:kxm5e9jd] It sounds like you've been burned in the past by partnerships Philip![/quote:kxm5e9jd] I follow Dave Ramsey when it comes to money and business. If you take no loans it takes longer to get there but when you make decisions they are the best most thought out that they can be. When you make decisions leveraged out to the max they are usually not the right decisions long-term. If you take on a partner 50/50 you have to think about everything. What if they die? What if they sue you for not doing your part? What if they embezzle? There are a million of these questions when you have a partner. Loans are OK but I would still be very weary and make sure you KNOW not think but KNOW you will make a multiple based ORDERS before you take a loan.

How Important is Feedback in eBay? How Important is Feedback in eBay? - Just a couple of questions to answer about eBay purchases that may help people make decisions about eBay decisions...... 1. Have you made eBay purchases? 2. Was the seller's feedback important? 3. Do you sell on eBay? 4. Do you worry about your feedback score? I have bought and sold on eBay. I do consider feedback scores. And I do worry about feedback left for me.
Re: New Year Resolutions... Re: New Year Resolutions... - I generally don't make resolutions - they just end up breaking anyway! But every January I do make a conscious effort to review my life and try to start over in areas that I've "fallen off the wagon" so to speak. One of my main goals at the moment is to become more active on the internet, and learn about how to make better business decisions.
