4 Killer Tips for Building Effective Teams

The word team implies a group of people. But is that what you want, just a team? Ideally we all want and want to be a part of an effective high performing team and that does not happen without work.

Below are four powerful tips to help you create an environment that supports a high performance and effective team.

Tip #1: Ensure that the team leader/manager and every single team member have a full understanding of the vision of the organization and how the team and them personally fit into creating that vision/reaching that goal or objective

Don’t stop at verbally sharing or handing out a written copy of the organizations vision, goal. As a leader you need to 1) know the role of every team member and 2) show them the importance of how what they do allows the organization to reach their goal

Tip #2: Show and tell employees that they are valued. Tell them when a great job has been done. When a milestone has been reached or there has been a team accomplishment call the team together and say thank you. Properly placed praises can be as powerful in getting quality results from employees as a large pay raise. Many people thrive on peer and superior recognition just as much as on money.

Tip #3: Provide clarity – each and every team member should be clear on what is expected of them and the expected outcomes of the job that they do as an individual and as a team.

Tip #4: Involve the team

Involve the team in setting priorities or brainstorming around new ideas. Ask team members if they have unique talents, experiences, expertise. You can draw on their skill sets to achieve tasks at a hand. Face it people love doing things that they are good at and feel confident doing. Now isn’t this the type of team player that you want.

Ideally it's all about getting started, so I challenge you to go beyond just reading this article and putting these tips to action

One book that comes to mind that covers it in an overall approach is "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen Covey. He addresses our inner life and the way it can change our effectiveness home and at work. There are corporations who have taken this model and effectively molded their business around it.
