The Amazing Karaoke Decades Game

Living in Japan, one ends up in a karaoke box every now and then. I find that singing karaoke is a great way to relieve stress and bond with friends, new and old. Karaoke is also a great place to practice your Japanese if you are a Japanese language student or someone that is on a quest of improving his/her proficiency. While in the shower one day, where all great ideas start, I came up with an idea for a karaoke game, which I later decided to call, "The Amazing Karaoke Decades Game!" It's a mix between singing and drinking, which most people do anyways in a Karaoke box. The reason I thought up this game was I saw one main problem with Karaoke, the downtime between the song you last sang and the next one. When it's only two people in a box, this isn't really a problem, but when you have 6, 8, or more people in a box, the time between songs (unless you are a hog) can be a good 15-20 minutes. That's a long time to sit and watch others sing. And usually what happens with Americans (as opposed to Japanese, is they don't just sit and watch; they just start singing in over your voice with their (what they think sounds amazing) not in tune singing voices.

So I saw two problems with this:

1.) People singing over my voice and ruining the song I just waited 15-20 minutes to sing.

2.) Waiting 15-20 minutes.

Now fair enough, within 30 minutes of being in a Karaoke box you are usually a slight bit intoxicated and you could care less, but....what if?!??! So I thought up this game to solve these problems. So now that you know the background of how this game got created, let's go over the rules...

THE AMAZING KARAOKE DECADES GAME RULES

Required people: Minimum: 4/Maximum: Unlimited

Required items: A Karaoke box (one that has scoring enabled - most have the functionality you just need to enable it), Alcohol, and some tambourines for added entertainment

Preparation: Divide your group into two teams.Enable the scoring on the Karaoke system as this will determine who the winner is.Order a round of shots for everyone!

Stage 1: To get everyone in the mood and comfortable, as singer is not everyone's cup of tea, but it is when you have had a bit to drunk and you're not concerned with what others think. So the goal is to first sing a group song together. Pick a song that everybody knows, think oldies or a song from your generation and one that is EASY to sing. Once you have picked the song (usually by a general consensus) pound the shot of alcohol you just ordered and start singing.

Stage 2: Okay, now you have just completed your first song together, everyone got a chance to sing and you all have a 1.5 ounces of hard liquor in you. Now order a round of beer for each member of ONE of the teams, this is the punishment for the losing team for the current round. It's called The Amazing Karaoke Decades game because each round will be a song from a different decade. So I recommend starting with a song from the 50's unless you guys know of songs older than that, then go with it. It doesn't matter really what year you start with, just pick a decade. So let's say we decide to go with the 50's. Each team will discuss amongst their group and decide on a song from the 50's. Each team will queue in their song and select 2-3 people that will sing the song. Decide on a limit of the number of singers, two usually works best if it's not a HUGE group. After you complete the song you will be given a score, write it down or memorize it. Then team 2 will sing their song and receive their score. The team with the lower score is the loser for the round and needs to chug their beers.

Stage 3: You have now successfully completed a round of the Amazing Karaoke Decades game. You will do the same thing you did in stage 2 but now select a song from the 60's or next decade. Order another round of beer for the losing team and queue up your songs and sing. The winner is the group that has the last man standing. Once you get to the current decade you can just start over from the decade you decided to start with in stage 2 of the game.

Enjoy!!

Re: I will be away Re: I will be away - Hi Guys Thanks for the good wishes. I had a really relaxing time and as soon as I get caught up will upload some pictures of the Big Game we saw on some of the drives. No lion GT as these parks are privately owned and they don't want predators who will eat the herbivores that they have paid a lot of money for . Saw some elephant though and rhino which was great. Change is coming - but unless I'm really wrong, it is not a change this country needs. Amazing how much a good speaker with a good speech writer can do. If you paid attention to the things he said "off script" - much of it is frightening. Chris
