Video Qualities and Their Dimensions Explained
A lot of people ask me what is the difference between 720p, 1080i, and 1080p, etc. With the recent boom of the buzz word High Definition or more often used acronym, HD, I thought I would quickly write up a quick explanation of the differences.
When speaking of video qualities people tend to use the term DVD or HD video. The more technically savvy people will throw in terms like 720p, 1080i, and even 1080/30p. What do these mean?
They are basically just easier ways of telling you the dimensions (which equates to quality) of the video. Here is a table I quickly through together to make it easier to see:
Common Name Dimensions Short Name
Standard (NTSC DV) 720x480 480i
Enhanced Defintion 720x480 480p
High Definition (HDV) 1280x720 780p
High Definition (HD) 1920x1080 1080i
Full HD 1920x1080 1080p
So your best picture quality will be with a 1080p device with matching TV that supports 1080p devices. It's hard to find video even in the 1080p format at this time, so usually 780p and 1080i is adequate for most.
With this information you should now understand what you are getting when you are purchasing video recorders and digital cameras. Also this is extremely helpful when you are using video editing software as usually you will have to start your video project in a specific video format and dimension. This will help you to pick the right settings before you even start out with your project and doing the hard work of editing your video just to find out you started with the wrong size to begin with.
