Are you developing the next level of management as leaders to be called upon as your organization grows? Who's on your bench being groomed to take your organization to the next level? Who's currently in your leadership pipeline; how were they selected? Is your pipeline large enough for your anticipated needs? Are you and your current leaders too busy with day to day activities to focus on building and nurturing the pipeline?
Not having good leaders when needed means more than a lack of productivity and innovation -- their absence has serious bottom-line impact. Operating costs are driven up and organizational growth is inhibited because leadership resources required to expand (or replace) at the optimal time simply do not exist. they were not equipped or trained to handle, can have devastating effects throughout the organization.
Many business executives learn the hard way. Observations from the "School of Hard-knocks"...
- Relying on informal leadership pipeline planning is insufficient. A leadership selection strategy and a development program must be developed
- Do not focus solely on VP or executive level positions. Rather, identify the key positions within
the organization. Put focus, attention, money, and resources on strategic succession planningat those levels - Don't allow immediate business activities get in the way
of leadership development - Don't put leaders in leadership positions until you've
trained them thoroughly - There must be accountability for developing and implementing the leadership pipeline
throughout the organization, or it will not happen - Hire sooner, train longer
- Building and maintaining the leadership pipeline is a continuous process
