Having a Conversation with An Artist Painting Out of Doors
Article Overview: Especially in Summer, you are likely to encounter artists outside with all of their equipment painting happily. You will see them in the cities, in the country, in rural areas, in museums sometimes, by oceans, by lakes, by farms. Speak with them if you feel so moved. One of the most exciting things for an artist is to sell a painting right on site that is not yet dry if it is oil and perfectly dry if it is an acrylic or watercolor. If an artist is shy or would rather not speak, you will surely know it. Still, most artists enjoy conversing with art lovers and others.

Having a Conversation with An Artist Painting Out of Doors
Spring, Summer and
Fall, you find artists outdoors and in galleries painting all over
towns, cities and in the country. Don't be afraid to speak with them.
What if you feel like you would be disturbing them? Ask them if they
would mind a short conversation. If they are receptive, ask your
questions, make your comments, and maybe, if you like what you see, buy
the painting the artist is working on.
What if you don't know what to say? Here are some suggestions:
1. Are you from this area?
2. Do you specialize in a specific type of painting?
3. Do you paint in all mediums or do you specialize in painting in one medium?
4. Make some comments about the painting the artist is working on.
Imagine how exciting it would be if the artist you see is extroverted
and begins the conversation! Don't count on it. Many artist are
introverts.
Speaking with creative people excites, stimulates, gives you a perspective of a lifestyle you are curious about.
So, when you see artists, get to know them. Artists are amazing
individuals who are always doing something new, in new ways,
experimenting and loving their work.
Enjoy!

The Artist's Way
-
I do highly recommend The Artist Way by Julia Cameron.[/quote:q2vd6qat]
Hi Shri,
I haven't gotten very far in "The Artist's Way", so I was just wondering what makes it such a popular/inspirational book for creative minds? And more importantly, how is it any different than your typical "run of the mill" self-help books in the market today?
And I know it's going to sound silly, but I actually decided to pick up that book because I read somewhere that it's Nicole Scherzinger's (i.e. the lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls) favorite book.
Re: When to give away your product or service for free
- Hi David.
I have a new product on the market, as I have earlier posted in the sales & marketing forums (called "a new product"), anyway I have been doing some door to door knocking and it seems because my art prints take up so much wall space, it is quite a risk for them to just go ahead, into business with me.
So today I started saying to them "ok, why dont I just leave a couple of artworks here for a fortnight & if you get lots of customer interest then we can discuss business further, but if not, then I will simply take them back & you won't here from me again"
This new tactic really seems to be working. Instead of saying "well...... Im really not sure if I have the wallspace...." they have started saying "oh... ok.... that sounds like a good idea.... yes, why dont we do that".
I am dam sure my products will attract lots of interest, so a foot in the door is all I need.
So thanks for the post.

Re: What Are Your Reading Habits?
-
I'm a reader. I read for information, I read for relaxation. I read for work - I do reviews for my various websites.
My question here is, for each of you, what books, if any, did you read [i:2dsvvbka]before [/i:2dsvvbka]you started up your business - that you chose because you were doing research, etc.
[i:2dsvvbka]Did [/i:2dsvvbka]you do any research beforehand?
And today, now that your business is established, what books do you read? Are you actively in search of new books on ways to do things better, or now that your business is successful, do you no longer bother to keep up with the current fads in management, etc. etc.[/quote:2dsvvbka]
I read a lot for fun, research and to learn new things - but almost all of my business know how has come through hands on experience. After getting the nuts and bolts info and knowledge through work, there have been some books that I read to hone the knowledge, but that's for writing and promotions.
I do highly recommend The Artist Way by Julia Cameron.

Re: A new product line
- Thankyou for taking the time to check out my website & for posting a lengthy reply!! It is very much appreciated.
I have a special ablity to walk into any market and immidiately spot symptoms of a potential oppertunity , which start flashing up at me. So when I started painting & selling online I suddenly got funnelled down into this process of trial & error, coming up with the ultimate designs for my target market. I seem to beable to (& with ease) break any product or service down to its bones and see what about it sells. So in terms of colour, subject matter, use of materials, content, method... it is all carefully thought out, all combining to produce a product that when I put it down in front of someone they say I don't know what it is about this, but I really like it!
Thankyou for your thoughts on using a mass distributer (already with a huge list of customers). I have considered this, but the only problem is that this method is out of line with my goal of having a major wholesale fine art prints company.
So maybe I am taking on too much. Number 1 I want to get these prints all over the country (& abroad) before they go out of fashion. But I also want to have this company that I speak of. So maybe it is too much to ask for both at the same time.
I do have real determination. So maybe this will allow to accomplish both things.
Although it would be much easier to just go through a distributer.... hmm, I guess it comes down to a choice.
Thanks again for your help.
Kind regards,
Dale Gallagher, New Zealand Artist
