Coaching Skills inspire new managers to be better leaders

Guest post by: Juliette Robertson

Article Overview: When you begin to teach your new managers how to coach their staff, from Induction, you are setting them up for success with their teams and investing in your company’s success. Don't wait until they struggle or copy poor management styles from those around them. Here's how to give them the coaching skills early in their careers and help create great leaders for the future.

Coaching Skills inspire new managers to be better leaders

Executive Coaching may have traditionally been reserved for more senior executives and middle managers but as an Executive Coach and Workplace Coach Trainer I believe that instilling a coaching mindset needs to begin early and even be built into Induction Programs for companies keen to fast track a coaching culture change.

We know that the first 90 days in any role is a time of proving yourself and Gen Y know that well. However new managers often win roles based on their technical skills and are given very little guidance and training on how to manage the day to day people issues that they face. For progressive companies that recognize the importance of leadership, teaching new managers coaching skills early not only fast tracks their personal results but has a huge roll on affect for the company culture.

New managers in their 20's benefit most by learning coaching skills early in their career for 2 reasons.

1) They are courageous. They are so keen to improve themselves and make their mark that they have the courage to embrace new skills and practice what they learn and they are grateful for the opportunity.

2) They are the leaders of the future and as they master these coaching skills and use them throughout their careers, they will positively influence and develop more and more up and coming leaders in their care. We are introducing a powerful cycle of growth and change here.

I have had the privilege to coach and train managers at varying levels of seniority. Senior Executives and many middle managers love the 1:1 attention and focus and support that Executive Coaching provides them but find it very tough to adapt their leadership style to demonstrate those same coaching principles with their teams and nor do they want to. For many, it becomes too difficult to change styles.

My experience has been that even after managers dedicate full days of training to learn how to coach their staff and experiencing inspiring breakthrough moments in the training room, the inspiration of new skills is quickly diminished and often vanishes by the intrusions of a working day. The challenge has always been how to help managers embed the skills over time.

Having trained close to 800 leaders face to face over the years, I knew there had to be a better way and I found it by changing my target market and my method of delivery.

That involved delivering on-line to new managers, supervisors, team leaders and project leaders and what we've found is that this is attracting managers and inquiry from all over Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong and New Zealand but it's the combination of theory, practical workplace coaching assignewments and live on-line tutorial support that is unique.

Companies who are committed to helping managers embed Coaching skills, not just learn the theory will see quick results but choose your course wisely. Look for courses that are structured to give managers support over many weeks and even months as they coach their staff and gain confidence and skill. And if its online, it's affordable for everyone and very attractive to Gen Y.

When you reach them early in their careers and give them access to easy Workplace Coaching Skills, a light goes on and new managers suddenly see how meaningful a role they can play in developing their staff. It' very inspiring to unleash their potential.

Re: Politeness! Re: Politeness! - The Scouts were probably nervous and very uncomfortable doing what they were being made to do, and that is understandable. I put the onus on the leaders to properly coach and encourage the attending Scouts to be properly appreciative towards contributors. I see this instance as a possible failing of the leaders. Perhaps the leaders would benefit from a letter offering friendly feedback? GT :-]

Re: Another Moderator Tip Re: Another Moderator Tip - Hi GT / Trent - great ideas. We run on phpbb3 so if there is a plugin you think we should install I can definitely look into it. It's also based on a MYSQL database so we can run queries against it (like we do for the recent forum posts, contest leaders, and all-time leaders across the top). If you can think of a report we can generate that would help then I can also look into it!
Business Coaching Internship Review Business Coaching Internship Review - I joined in during the first phase of the internship and at this point we are committed to doing research and development of RSC Business Group operating in Toronto. RSC Business Group already has products and services in Coaching Small businesses in Los Angeles but we didn't want to assume that the same products were wanted and needed in the Toronto market. Our goal at this point is to commit to interviewing 1000 business owners to capture this data. Through the teleconference internship I've been involved in we've been focusing on Communication Skills and on active listening which are practiced when we conduct our interviews and Coach our clients when they come on board. This is a lot harder than it sounds! Part of the internship is also creating the Toronto RSC Business Group's departments, job descriptions, Marketing and Communication plans etc that a business owner would create for their own company. This trains us in the way we would coach a company as well. The internship is phased in two parts and there is compensation plan involved as well for the clients you personally bring in. These clients are coached directly by Robert Chun as you begin but you are given a chance to learn his techniques. I haven't gone through this experience yet though. It's hard to explain Robert Chun's method of Coaching as it happens at a psychological level in his ability to listen and question the person being coached into the next steps they need to take. The Teleconferences are 2 hours long but it's very interactive. If you have a desire to explore this area of Business I'd recommend contacting Vwodek listed above and get invited to a Coaching Conference call. You can decided then if it's for you. Note: it is a commitment but the skills you walk away with whether you plan on working with RSC Business Group or not is invaluable.
