When is Business or Executive Coaching NOT appropriate?
Before I tell you the answer to when Coaching your employees is NOT appropriate, I must first qualify a universally agreed philosophy about Life, Business and Executive Coaching. If you are new to professional Coaching, you may not agree with this philosophy but it is the cornerstone of the Coaching Profession.
Life, Business and Executive Coaching are all based on the philosophy that your staff already know the answers to the majority of their challenges but lack confidence or insight to back their own judgment and take action. The coach’s job is to unlock their inner wisdom so that they can act more confidently.
So if coaching is based on the belief that intrinsically, your staff have the ability to solve the majority of their own problems because they have either experienced it before or know someone who has…then when is coaching NOT appropriate?
There are three circumstances that come to mind.
1) Do not coach your staff if the situation is totally new and the person is truly out of their depth. If they have NEVER experienced something like this before nor do they know anyone else who has, you will be in for a long and drawn out conversation if you take the coaching approach to asking questions like “So what needs to occur next Susan?” For example, would you coach a new staff member on the payroll procedures in the office if they have never been trained in payroll? No you’d probably give them the proper training and guidance or orientation first. Once they are trained, then they can be effectively coached to recall, consider, remember, and work out answers to problems based on what they now know.
2) The second situation where coaching is not appropriate is when you are faced with deadlines or emergencies – when you have to act fast. In situations like this you cannot afford to waste time asking “So what do you think might be the best solution here David?” Sometimes a manager just needs to act quickly, make decisions and tell people what to do.
3) And thirdly, it is not effective to coach staff when YOU are overly emotional, angry or stressed. If you are not capable of leaving your troubles at the door before you begin a coaching session, its best to postpone the session to another time. Coaching is about the coachee – not about YOU so don’t engage if you can’t give your coachee your 100% attention.
At any time, you have a variety of people management tools to draw on and Coaching is one of the most personally rewarding and powerful tools you have if used correctly. Learn the skills and leave a positive legacy with those you lead! It's an amazing journey. Enjoy!

Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight
- Hi Everyone,
Gosh, I REALLY appreciate your concrete feedback. This was far more than I expected and I'm glad you said what you thought straight out.
Each of you have shared something of value and I want to take some more time to think and really go over what each of you have said. However, I can see there are some things I need to change right away. What an interesting point about a NEW program perhaps making people think they are guinea pigs! This is NOT what I want to convey!
It's funny how we can see some things so clearly in others while not always seeing it for ourselves! I must admit there are a few things I've been meaning to change (like my bio which is very outdated). Obviously, these things need to be higher on my priority list. You caught me like the plumber who puts his clients first and doesn't get around to fixing his own tap!
As far as my target market, I do feel quite strongly about working with Women Leaders and doing Leadership Coaching with them. It's non-negotiable in my books. In my Executive Coaching training, the terms "Leaders" and "Executives" are interchangable. To me, an Executive is a Leader and so is the Business Woman or Entrepreneur who is CEO of her own business. I love working with decision makers!
What I did learn is that I need to avoid opening up the Leadership term beyond what I described above. I'm also wondering if there is a misunderstanding with the general public as to what Leadership Coaching really is.
Leadership Coaching is all about developing your leadership skills, both as a people manager and in more effectively running and growing the business. There is ALWAYS room for growth in some way. As well, sometimes, we just need a sounding board to clarify what our next BEST step is.
In fact, if a woman thinks she has nothing to work on, then we aren't a good Client/Coach fit anyway. How can she grow if she doesn't see the value of expressing ALL of the great ability within her? How can her company grow if she doesn't see the value of strategic planning for the next best level?
Thanks again to you all! I will go back to my website and really question whether I am conveying the right message.
I got more than I bargained for in this Spotlight... you generously offered way more than I was asking. I think we could be on to something great for the Forum.
Now it's time to let someone else have the spotlight. It would be great if everyone took a turn!
In gratitude,
Tami
What are you doing to grow your business Ladies?
- Hi Ladies,
I thought it might be great for us women to share what we are doing lately to develop our business(es).
I have now signed a lease on a new commercial space where my husband and I plan to open a Sport's Consignment and Cappuccino Bar. We're an active tourist destination and we also want to give back to our local community by offering discounted quality equipment. I'm doing lots of research and planning right now.
For my Coaching Business, I have signed up for a new coaching mentorship program by one of USA's top Executive Coach trainers, Drayton Boylston. He's sure to challenge me, offer continued professional development and keep me on track as I grow my Coaching business. I'm quite excited about the opportunity since you have to be invited to even participate in this group.
What are you doing lately or what are you planning in order to develop your business?
I'm hoping we can all encourage each other to keep our businesses growing.
Warm regards,
Tami
$1000 and a stupid idea

"We started off with $1,000 and a stupid idea." It began as This Month, a guide for tourists, and morphed into Executive Lifestyle.[/quote:8mkh1lv7]
Hi Barbara,
I find this story about Bill and Heidi Dittmar's success to be especially interesting! Would you happen to know what the catalyst or tipping point was for their change from a guide for tourists to an Executive Lifestyle magazine?
Thanks
Exclusive: Interview with Results
- Hi Forum Members,
I'm helping start up a Business Coaching and Consulting company here in Toronto, Ontario, Canada (a Subsidiary of RSC Business in Los Angeles).
As a Research and Development Intern I am required to practice my listening and interview skills by surveying Small and Medium Businesses on thier Business.
This Survey is designed by RSC Business to also assist the Business being interviewed more insight into their own business.
I am looking to interview about 30 businesses across North America over the span of 3 months.
At the end of these interviews I will be publishing a report of the results and they will be made available for free to the Interviewees. The Report data will include responses from a minimum of 100 interviews.
I would like to extend this opportunity to members of the Forum.
If you would like to have this short 20-30 minute interview conducted on your Business and you reside in North America please send me an email or PM.
Please contact me at andy[at]jvprosperity[dot]com to arrange our interview and to get free access to the results when they are published.
Business Coaching Internship Review
- I joined in during the first phase of the internship and at this point we are committed to doing research and development of RSC Business Group operating in Toronto.
RSC Business Group already has products and services in Coaching Small businesses in Los Angeles but we didn't want to assume that the same products were wanted and needed in the Toronto market. Our goal at this point is to commit to interviewing 1000 business owners to capture this data.
Through the teleconference internship I've been involved in we've been focusing on Communication Skills and on active listening which are practiced when we conduct our interviews and Coach our clients when they come on board. This is a lot harder than it sounds!
Part of the internship is also creating the Toronto RSC Business Group's departments, job descriptions, Marketing and Communication plans etc that a business owner would create for their own company. This trains us in the way we would coach a company as well.
The internship is phased in two parts and there is compensation plan involved as well for the clients you personally bring in. These clients are coached directly by Robert Chun as you begin but you are given a chance to learn his techniques. I haven't gone through this experience yet though.
It's hard to explain Robert Chun's method of Coaching as it happens at a psychological level in his ability to listen and question the person being coached into the next steps they need to take.
The Teleconferences are 2 hours long but it's very interactive. If you have a desire to explore this area of Business I'd recommend contacting Vwodek listed above and get invited to a Coaching Conference call. You can decided then if it's for you.
Note: it is a commitment but the skills you walk away with whether you plan on working with RSC Business Group or not is invaluable.
