Are we all just OVERwhelmed?
|
| Guest post by: Maria Carlton |
Article Overview: How much time do we really have to spend writing comments, posting on Facebook, and engaging online in discussion groups? When we're busy, this is an area that can end up as not much more than a distraction. However, it's an important part of our marketing and being selective is one way to help ourselves to do this well, and avoid overwhelm. Do you pick and choose carefully how much online time you devote to your marketing and who you'll read, share with, comment on? Or do you default to all or nothing with great regularity?

Are we all just OVERwhelmed?
I confess to waking each morning and checking my inbox, Facebook and Linked in feeds on my iphone, and yes, I know some might be inclined to say - get a life Maria! Well ok - then I do get up walk the dog, get to the gym some days, and generally get busy as I'm sure we all do. And hey - this is my personal version of reading the morning paper or watching the breakfast news.
What I've started to notice a lot lately though, is that many people post snippets and comments, promote our blogs and events, and generally jump firmly into the Social Networking world online with gusto and intelligence. We see the benefits of keeping in touch with each other through what might be considered flimsy contacts, learning of colleagues travels, opportunities, social events and more. But - are we really any the wiser as to how many people actually stop and read our posts, apart from seeing when someone 'likes' something we've said, or better, posts a comment and gives either feedback or continues a debate?
I know it's getting ever harder to sway someone to post this feedback, and I'm often defaulting to just 'liking' something rather than getting into the feedback thing, simply because it's too hard to justify doing so. Often I don't want to be bothered seeing the updates that come with being part of the comments group on Facebook.
In one of my business roles as Chief Editor of an international website, and founder and manager of another online group, as well as active participant in yet another one, I'm very aware of how much writing is done, and feedback NOT given, despite the website traffic for each of these sites. So I know things are being read, but it's easy to become despondent as writers when posting something regularly, if we don't know our words are getting through to people.
- Are we all a little overwhelmed by just how much information there really is out there?
- Are we seeking quick fixes so much that we can't be bothered reading to the end of the posts anymore?
- What does it really take to engage readers online and share?
