Overcoming Imposter Syndrome

Guest post by: Maria Carlton

Article Overview: You know that moment when you feel like you suddenly fluked it, and are waiting for that hand to come up behind you and tap you on the shoulder, followed by a voice that says "you don't really think you can get away with that do you...". It's that moment when you feel like you were caught playing dress ups, and wonder how you even had the audacity to do 'it' at all. There are hundreds of books about Imposter Syndrome, and even online quizzes to see if 'you have it'. I believe that knowing it exists and that it is common for so many of us in this professional experts' industry, is the best way to move past it.

Overcoming Imposter Syndrome

As a coach, I sometimes get all sorts of questions (and a few answers too) thrown at me and the one that lately seems to come up most often is around the idea of 'imposter syndrome'. "Why do I feel like I'm failing or should be when everything is actually going right?" And it's both women and men who seem to wonder how on earth they got to be so successful and are a little afraid of it all in case it somehow vanishes again before they've had time to really settle in and enjoy it.
What is it exactly? Well when I Googled it just now I found this explanation on Wiki: Also known as fraud syndrome, is a psychological phenomenon in which people are unable to internalize their accomplishments.
That seems to sum it up really well. And the more I come across the questions about it, the more I see it as the one thing that holds us back when we are writing books or putting ourselves out there on the platform as speakers. It's that inner voice that yells out behind the words that only we can hear: "shut up - this is rubbish, no one even believes you". It's the same voice asking rather rudely - "how on earth did you even get here and what makes you think you can stay and play with 'real' experts?"
I was on a coaching call just this week with a man who has been enormously successful in his field, and enjoyed some fantastic international stage time, as well as writing a very good book about his favourite philosophies, who just doesn't quite know how he did it and is a little unnerved about it all. The big thing is, this is so common. It's like not quite knowing if you really do have a magic formula or if you simply fluked it - all of it, all your life.

Acknowledge that it's the voice of your inner critic and challenge it head on, then tell it to simply get out of your way and it will let you move on. It may follow you off and on for years, but will not stop you if you are determined to push past it and believe that you really are meant to be here, doing what you are great at and sharing your stories, wisdom and ideas.

I'm the GO-TO GIRL, working with professional speakers, non-fiction authors, and industry experts helping to make them 'famous' to their target markets. This is done using a combination of Publishing (books), Speaker development, and online/offline marketing strategies. I've written a number of books, spoken in several countries, and am described as a 'Maven, Connector and Influencer' by my peers. That means I know a lot of people, and LOVE to join the dots on opportunities and people.

Re: What is your biggest challenge? Today? Re: What is your biggest challenge? Today? - The biggest hurdle for me to start my online firm, was getting financed and overcoming the technology learning curve. I spent the better part of 6 months attending workshops and unpaid training to learn about SEO and online content management systems. I also spent a month learning basic programming, web site creation tools, and general IT skills. The culmination of this training enabled me to make a thorough presentation to the bank and to private investors. I was able to secure some finances and some servers to run my operation. However, the biggest challenge was time. Overcoming what to 'do' with your time is something entrepreneurs struggle with every day. There is always something you could be doing 'better' or 'worse' with your time.
