Top 10 Tips for Finding Blogging Subjects

Guest post by: Maria Carlton

Article Overview: I was asked today how often I blog, and when I replied, 'nearly every day', she asked how I managed to find enough topics to write about so often. So I thought - what a great subject to write about...

Top 10 Tips for Finding Blogging Subjects

Here are my top 10 tips for finding subjects to write about:

  1. Make a list of all the questions you get asked about your business or industry.
  2. Ask some of your customers what they most want to know about right now in relation to what you do
  3. Review your old articles - what have you covered there and how can you get 2-3 short blogs out of each
  4. Look at what you competitors are blogging about - use these to comment on or put your own spin on
  5. Read your industry websites and publications, seek to find a minimum of 5 things to month to comment on there
  6. Consider what's happened in your week... good, bad, expectations met or not. What's going on around you?
  7. Go to a school sports game and look at what people are doing. Can you find the curiosity, courage, hope, anxiety, joy, family moments, achievement, despair (when the goal is missed), or other moments that might reflect on your own regular topic? Write about the metaphors you see around you.
  8. When next having lunch or a drink with friends – ask them what they think you do. See what comes out of that conversation.
  9. Ask your kids – or your neighbours’ kids – what is going on for them and link your regular subject to what they reply.
  10. Go for a long walk, without your ipod, cellphone or anyone else, ( ok, you can take your dog) and just consider the work you do and what you’d like other people to know about. Return to your office and list 6 things that came up.
For me, I create these lists as drafts and then on the days when I'm struggling to find something to write about - not often that I have this challenge anymore - I have a set of drafts which I've already started and can work on. These are in my material bank. I don't have to access this very often, because I follow tip number 6, 5 and 4 a lot so I have current things ready in my mind frequently (like today).

Another thing I find helpful is to write a second blog about one topic as a 'to follow' or part 2 when I have time. Some of these need to go one after the other, but often they can be posted quite well apart from each other.

I advocate blogging at least once every week, and only lately have I been pushing this and aiming for a minimum of 6-8 posts a month, and I've certainly noticed a huge difference in my Google rankings and visitor numbers. When it’s holiday time, I try to use that time to ‘bank’ extra blogs and articles so that when I’m not feeling like doing a lot (and we all do have those days) I can still pull something up and post it.

Blogging for Entrepreneurs Blogging for Entrepreneurs - If you run a small company, you may find that the world of blogging for Entrepreneurs is a world that you want to be a part of. Blogging is a great way to get the word out to consumers about your product or service, and it can even be useful for inspiring employee loyalty and helping you keep your workers at peak morale. If you are looking for a way to take your business to the next level, consider what starting a blog might be able to do for you. Blogging for entrepreneurs has a lot in common with all other types of blogging, but it has its own unique pitfalls and strengths. The key to having a successful blog as a business owner is keeping your goals clear and concrete at every step of your blogging adventure. It can be all to easy to get sidetracked, especially if you are just learning about the exciting possibilities of blogging technology, but if you want your blog to succeed you need to stay focused. Write up a plan for how often you will update, how you will promote your blog and retain readers, whether you will feature photographs or video, and other aspects of your blog, and then stick to it with the same kind of determination that you used when you built your company.

Re: Where is the best place to find a web developer? Re: Where is the best place to find a web developer? - That's a really tough one. Finding a business partner is like finding a wife - it takes a lot of trust to get the right one. I would try to hang out at tech-related startup events and see if you hit it off with anybody. Good luck!
