How To Inspire Customers To Buy

Trying to get customers to buy comes with certain challenges. Find out 6 quick and easy tips. Learn how to impress your customers, speed up decisions, and never ever dread selling again.

“I hate selling” is a common refrain in many small businesses. Entrepreneurs, subject matter experts and service professionals seem to have a built-in resistance to ‘selling.’

In fact, inspiring people to make a decision does not require heavy-handed or unethical sales techniques. Quite the opposite.

Here is a quote that lights the way through the snarky territory of sales and customer interaction.

“Think like a man of action, and act like a man of thought.”

- Henri L. Bergson

Let’s break this down into specific actions.

1. Start With Yourself

While many sales communication trainings start with techniques and tips, it’s important to look inside. Start with yourself. What are your beliefs about selling? What are your experiences?

Have you had a bad experience of ‘being sold to’ in the past? Have you developed a negative attitude toward selling? Would you rather do anything else in the world other than communicate to customers?

If you take a rigorous inventory of your own beliefs and experiences, you’ll see that you may be carrying some unnecessary baggage.

2. What Motivates You?

What inspires you to take action? Do you research extensively? Do you need hard evidence and data? Are you influenced by opinions of experts? Do you act on the recommendations of others?

Explore what motivates you to take action. This depth understanding will help you see options for how to make decisions.

3. What Motivates Others?

While you may rely on evidence, statistics and expert testimony, what do other people do to make a decision? Investigate. Ask friends. Ask family. Ask coworkers. Discover how other people consider, choose and move ahead in a buying decision.

Do you notice any similarities? Do you notice any differences?

4. Experiment and Refine

Taking a thoughtful approach, start to experiment. Share an idea and test out different ways to inspire people to move forward. Show a new gadget to friends…and provide evidence, insights and personal experience.

Test out different ways to motivate people to make a decision. Notice, you can test out ‘selling’ without ever selling an object or service. Start by ‘selling’ ideas and gadgets that you’ve found useful.

This helps you separate the process from any personal benefit. Along the way, you’ll see what works best for different audiences.

5. Up Your Game

Now, put your newfound interactive skills to work. Sketch out your services, consulting, or business. Show in pictures and words what people will gain from working with you.

If you need inspiration, you’ll find tons of resources on visual storytelling online. Read articles, use checklists, and if you want to dive deeper, take a self-paced online training.

Learning new skills is fast and fun. Just watch a video, read an article and put your new skills to work. As more and more professionals go online for training, they also start relying on online training for quick tips to grow their business.

6. Check Out Coaching

Not a self-starter? No problem. Work side by side with an objective coach to start growing your skills. Many busy professionals prefer virtual coaching for its convenience, ease and privacy.

Working with an executive coach is the fastest way to improve skills. You’ll get targeted tips that are uniquely tailored to your personality, presentation style, and audience.

Each of these 6 tips show how to dissolve old beliefs about buying and selling. Combined, they have a tremendous power. Use this power to give effective presentations. Show your ideas, share your value, and inspire customers to buy what you’re offering.

Re: pitching Re: pitching - Friendliness is closely related to the concept of "permission marketing" as articulated by Seth Godin. The old method was "interruption marketing" where you suddenly get an ad in your face whether you want it or not...
20% increase 20% increase - One of my businesses uses a system to help business owners manage customer relationships and encourage more referrals. I'm finding that this economy is making business owners take a second look at their business and it's assets (aka customers) to see how they can leverage them. Make those Customers (one-time sale) into Clients (repeat sales). I'm finding them more open to having this discussion with me and the results are speaking for itself. Everyone I've worked with so far has seen at least a 20% increase in sales or referrals within 4-6 months all done by managing an existing relationship.
