Three Billion-Dollar Ideas
Starting a new business is all about the idea. It may be an original
idea, a twist on an existing business idea or a copy of something that’s
already working.
I’m feeling very generous today so I’m going to share with you three
start-up ideas that may be worth billions. (You can send me a cheque later.)
Idea #1: Baby Boomers. So many wonderful businesses
are emerging to serve this powerful cohort of 10 Million Canadians, born
between 1947 and 1966.
They aren’t heading for retirement homes yet (although that would be a
good investment), but they do want to give you their easy-earned money for adventure
travel experiences, fancy cars, home improvements, anti-aging miracle creams,
weight-loss clinics and personal concierge services. Oh, and they’ll pay
handsomely for you to look after their young children, old parents or precious
pets.
Idea # 2: The Internet. The Internet remains the
“Wild West” of our times...it’s still being explored and has yet to reach its
full potential. You need to be there.
Start an online service that connects millions of people (like
Facebook), sells something inexpensive (like Apple’s iTunes downloads) or subscribes
users to a platform (like 37Signals.com). The secret to making billions on the
‘net is scalability: digital has little cost so you can serve millions of
people for next to nothing.
Idea # 3: Financial Services. People will always need
money. People who have money want to make more of it; while people who have no
money will pay to get some.
Help people to get the money they want. You can help the rich get richer
by supplying brilliant investment advice, flipping their vacation properties or
brokering their boats for sale. Or, you can help the working-class folks to
make ends meet with your short-term loans, affordable apartments or rent-to-own
appliances.
Any of these ideas could make you rich. It’s action that matters.
