What’s The Only Thing Worse Than an Incompetent Subordinate?

For a manager, what's the one thing worse than an incompetent subordinate? The answer to this old corporate axiom and riddle surprised and amused me so much that it inspired this briefing. The answer…

The only thing worse than an incompetent subordinate is a hard working, incompetent subordinate.

Why is this so true? Here are two more axioms to help explain it.

The First Rule of Holes: When you’re in one, stop digging.

The hard working incompetent doesn’t know when to stop digging. He/she gets deeper and deeper into trouble and the damage takes longer for you to un-do if it can be repaired at all.

The Puritan Ethic: Work hard and become successful.

All too often our admiration for raw effort blinds us to the fact that little is being achieved. In organizations where measurable accountability wanes, one of the few criteria we have for evaluating performance is effort. Bob works so hard, how can we criticize him? The Puritan Ethic can lead us to confuse activity with achievement.

Ask yourself…

* Do you have any hard working incompetents that are hindering your potential for achievement?
* Is anyone taking too long to do their otherwise routine tasks or putting in too many hours after everyone else has gone home?
* Is the situation being fostered by a lack of accountability?
* Are your people working hard or working smart?

A Three Step Remedy

1. Establish Measurable SMART Goals for every position and monitor and discuss their progress.
2. If your people cannot display the competency to achieve, they are likely in the wrong job. As long as you foster or ignore this, who is really being served?
3. Establish competency models for your positions and assess new candidates for the proper fit.

Let the market correct itself. There is no reason for the Government to bail everyone out. If the businesses, mainly banks, weren't corrupted with greed, this wouldn't have happened. They are and it did, so let them dwindle away and pay for their mistakes. That's what any small business has to do. Why should they be any different. They have gotten away with it for over 10 years! What's more sad is the fact that Obama had the media wrapped around his finger, and still does. The media is just as corrupt as the banks.

[/quote:jxsovz2s] I think that if "worker bees" approach their job with the right attitude, they can accomplish much. There are plenty of other people at the restaurant, so one is able to meet and interact with lots of people, see their personalities, etc. which is good for evaluating employees when you're in a position to hire them yourself. I think the main fault with fast-food restaurants is that they have such a hard time getting employees that they'll take anyone they can get, and then they only give them a couple of hours training before they put them out on the floor. Worse, they put them on the floor during the rush hour, and pretty soon they're in the deep end and not having fun because they don't really know what they're doing, and their managers are snapping at them and the customers are snapping at them and they get so frustrated that they quit. I suppose there are people who can pick up things very quickly and those are the ones that stick around...but there is certainly a high turnover rate. I talked a bit about this a month or so ago, when I related my experiences at a Kentucky Fried Chicken, where it was a comedy of errors, with me having to wait 20 minutes for my food, and then [i:jxsovz2s]still [/i:jxsovz2s]getting the wrong order. (And not the first time I'd had problems at this restaurant.) I have nothing but respect for fast food workers, and if they do screw up, I feel that 90% of the time it's the fault of the managers who didn't train them properly. But I doubt if the managers screw up because they don't care - [i:jxsovz2s]they [/i:jxsovz2s]probably haven't been trained properly in how to train their workers!
