Searching For A Business Idea – Do What You Were Born To Do

Guest post by: Joseph Lizio

Article Overview: There are as many reasons that individuals pick certain businesses over others as there are business failures. But, choosing the right business idea and its path may be as simple as looking within yourself.

Searching For A Business Idea – Do What You Were Born To Do

When asked how one goes about finding a business idea, the usual responses come up like:

Pick something that will make money as you don't want to start a business just to lose money, or

Pick something that will meet a consumer's need or desire - thus, something they will be willing to pay for.

I would like to add one more. Pick the business idea that you were born to do.

There is a lot yet to be said about the power of DNA. But, our DNA really shapes our lives from how we look (eye color, height, etc) to how we behave (static, emotional, rational, etc).

DNA also plays a major part in what we are good at (think athletes or artists) as well as what we are passionate about - in my case I am passionate about finance.

I first came across this concept while I was working for a major commercial bank. I was amazed at one of our regional manager's ability to remember minute details about the loan packages we sent to him for approval. Over and over again this person was able to recall very specific details about a borrower or their loan package after having only seen the write up once or twice and after only seeing it weeks or months prior. I was so amazed that I made a comment to my local branch manager; 'How is he able to remember that!' His response was that he had the right DNA.

Now, we all know that the ability to remember minuscule details could really be beneficial in any business situations, but this person's DNA also allowed him to be passionate about and very good in the world of finance. Thus, he chose or allowed his DNA to lead him into his career field.

It was the same for me. As a youngster, I always loved numbers - could remember a number about someone (their age, height, phone number) before I could remember their name. Then, when I took my first finance course in college, I was hooked. I could use the gifts in my DNA to carve out a living for myself and thus choose finance as my major and life's work.

Each one of us has a very unique set of DNA. This is not only what makes us who we are but differentiates us from others around us. And, in business, it is what makes you and your business different than your competitors; differences that can lead to your success or failure.

Therefore, I always suggest that when searching for a business idea - look inward first and try to find out what makes you who you are. In the end, not only will you be able to separate yourself from other businesses but will bring both passion and dedication to the mix. And, we all know that if you are passionate about what you do, not only will you do it well but it can also be infectious - meaning that your customers will begin to share your passion in the products and services you offer.

Just think about it. What makes Bill Gates or Steve Jobs so good at what they do? What makes a Venture Capitalist be able to see the value of a new business concept and the management team that put it together? What makes Warren Buffett such a great investor regardless of the economy? What makes your favorite mom and pop retail store such a success that you keep coming back?

It all has to do with the DNA of these people and how their DNA shaped them to create the businesses and industries that they are in.

Thus, if you are in the market to start a new business and are unsure what business to start, let your DNA and the traits you get from it, lead your way.

Magnetic Ads - Biz Idea Magnetic Ads - Biz Idea - Attn Young Entrepreneurs looking for a Business Idea. This came to me while sitting in Traffic for about 1 hour while looking and laughing at ridiculous bumper stickers. Note: this idea is rough but will help get the idea-momentum going. Idea: Sell advertising on the back of cars in the form of reusable magnetic signs (about the length of 2 or 3 bumper stickers) Most people shouldn't have reservations to participating if they get a cut of the monthly fee you charge the company advertising and it doesn't hurt their car. An example of a Magnetic Ad: Geico: I saved 15% on my Car Insurance. Call 1-800-U-SAVE-15 You don't have to pay the cost associated with creating the Magnetic Ad because you will advise the company that this belongs to them and you can get them in touch with someone who created reusable magnets. So your basically managing two sides: 1. Company's that want to advertise 2. People in your neighborhood (to start) who will put the ads on their car. Bigger cars can have more than one ad. Happy Money Making!
