3 Tips to Save Money at Your Small Business

In this economy, every small business owner is looking for innovative ways of cutting costs. While cost-cutting methods often require a tradeoff, it is often necessary to make certain sacrifices if it means keeping your business afloat. Consider these five ideas for slashing expenses at your business:

1. Monitor and Cut Shipping Costs

The extent to which businesses spend too much on shipping cannot be overstated - but it can be challenging to calculate the most efficient and inexpensive way to ship your products. Especially with the rise in e-commerce and online shopping, it is more important than ever to ensure that your company is implementing a cost-effective shipping strategy. Work with your shipping provider to map out whether your company should be using air or ground transportation, how you should consolidate your products, and how to track the performance of the products you've shipped. Keep an eye on every step of the process to ensure that money isn't being wasted.

2. Try Online Customer Service

There are many reasons why keeping your sales or customer service departments "in person" could be costing you unnecessary money. Your customer service might not need to be taking place in person or over the phone; customers are becoming more and more used to the idea that they might be speaking with an automated representative - and your savings could be huge because of it. Consider programs that do the talking for you; it sacrifices the human-to-human experience but it means more money for your business. Similarly, you can be executing your sales strategies online. There are programs available that allow you to make your sales presentations online, which can save money on multiple expenses.

3. Hire freelancers who can work from home or send your employees home

Having employees hanging out around the office might actually be costing you more than you realize. Every lightbulb, computer, television, or phone that you have turned on or plugged in means more money on your electricity bill that month. More employees means more space that you need to be paying for at your office. Not to mention, many employees don't work as efficiently over the course of a regular workday at the office than they would at home in their own time. Take a good look at your staff: could someone more specialized do the job in less time than the employees that you have hanging out around the office all the time? If so, you might want to consider hiring freelancers as a method of cutting costs. They can work from home and save you the additional money of having someone spend their whole day at the office.
