The Job Alternative
The Job Alternative
I remember being approached by a previous student who really
needed a jumpstart in her career. She, like many, was tired of
working from nine to five. She was tired of the everyday routine of
“business as usual.” She was tired of commuting one hour to work
and one hour back home each night. She was tired of the stress of
rushing without a single minute to console her crying child as she
dropped her off at daycare. She was tired of pressing her way to work
through snow, sleet, and rain only to battle an over demanding
supervisor. She was simply, tired.
Many of us, like this student, are really suffering in our careers,
whether it is our mundane schedules, the commute to work, or a lack
of passion in what we do.
Consider the following advice and job alternatives to breathe new
life into your career and ultimately your whole life.
Find the Passion
I’m sure you have heard more than your share of “Find Your
Passion” or “Live Your Passion” speeches or topics, but it really is
important. It is amazing to me the amount of time and effort many
have placed into careers they care nothing about. It is only a matter
of time before this person is “burned out” and wants to quit the work
he or she is doing. You must like what you are doing, be excited about
doing it, and of course over time be paid well for doing it.
If you have not done a thorough “soul-searching,” please take the
time now to do the following exercise: Write down on a blank sheet of
paper five hobbies, activities, or odd jobs you would do for free. Is
there something you would do even if you were awakened at three in
the morning to do it? If so, write it down. In another list of five, write
down what you are good at or what others have said you are good at.
Lastly, write a note to yourself on the back of that sheet of paper
about what you envision yourself doing. No doubt throughout your
life you have been given “hunches” about what you should be doing
with your life. When you dream, what do you see? What are you
wearing? Where are you living? What types of people are you talking
to? What are you doing?
Once completed, take some time to go over this exercise. Do you
notice some similar themes about you that are coming across? Does a
certain hobby or pastime keep popping up? In the “vision” exercise,
does your life match up to what you see? If not, why not slowly but
surely change things in your current life to reflect what you see in
your future life?
Each small step you take to live a life of passion and purpose will
lead you closer to the career that was meant for you. But what does
this all have to do with “The Job Alternative”? Well, many are caught
in the same scenario as my previous student. They get caught up in
lives and careers they absolutely hate. How? There are many, many
reasons, but one major reason for sure is they forget to follow their
passion.
Now that you know what your passion is, let’s look into
alternatives to the nine-to-five job.
