Business Travel: Staying Connected when You Are Away for a Long Time

It is so hard when you are traveling for extended periods of time. Six months at a single location locked up in a hotel hearing the arguing couple in the room next door; watching the same sales people at the hotel bar; and wanting nothing more than to hold your newborn, or walk your daughter to school. How can you keep in touch?

One way is to subscribe to an instant messaging service like Yahoo and Instant Message your family. You can take your digital camera along and take pictures of your hotel room, your hotel restaurant, just mundane things so that your family can feel like they are with you. Send those pictures home during your chats. Do you have a camera for your PC? Hold a video chat with your family. What routines are important to your family? Consider those and then reinforce them with the timing of your video chats. Maybe your video chats can correspond with bedtime.

Post cards are also helpful. Sending general messages with how your day went will help the folks at home feel connected. Also, is there something you can do virtually to help ease the stress at home? Yes! Making or confirming doctor's appointments or following up on phone calls from your location for the family will help you ease the stress at home. It will also help you stay involved in your family's life even though you are far away.

It is the little things that you can do for each other that will lower the stress levels when you are far away. Communication is the key.

These helped me in learning the art of the trade and today when I look back, I feel that these mistakes were quite silly.
