Make it easy for your customers to buy!

Guest post by: Russell Bowyer

Article Overview: If you want your customers to spend with you why not make it easy? This may seem obvious to you, but it is not always obvious to most business owners and I would like to get you thinking a bit here. Let me explain by example... I have just got back from a break myself and the guy that owned the apartments also owned the small supermarket down the road. The apartments were self catering so it would be good for the owner if the people staying there were to cook food and purchased from his shop. When we arrived he took time to mention his shop so that we would visit, which we duly did and I am sure you are waiting for the but here...and there is and not just one the way I see it.

If you want your customers to spend with you why not make it easy? This may seem obvious to you, but it is not always obvious to most business owners and I would like to get you thinking a bit here. Let me explain by example...

I have just got back from a break myself and the guy that owned the apartments also owned the small supermarket down the road. The apartments were self catering so it would be good for the owner if the people staying there were to cook food and purchased from his shop.

When we arrived he took time to mention his shop so that we would visit, which we duly did and I am sure you are waiting for the but here...and there is and not just one the way I see it.

1. If the owner were to say to the people staying in his apartments..."should you buy from my store I will give you a discount off all of your purchases" This discount could be 5% or 10% or whatever, but it provides a sense of loyalty and this guy has a ‘captured audience', albeit there are a number of other supermarkets around and some that I found to be cheaper. This business man has lost out on a significant amount of extra business, which is staring him in the face.

2. The facilities in the apartments were not what I would call ideal for self catering purposes and consisted of two electric hobs, a fridge and a few pots and pans - no oven or grill, no toaster, no kettle and no sufficient utensils for cooking a good meal. If he were to provide better facilities people might be more inclined to cook meals instead of going out for dinner, thereby giving the owner a better opportunity of extra food purchases.

3. The supermarket did not sell cold meats that could be cooked in the apartments - when I asked him where he had any meat or if there were any supermarkets around that did - he replied no and you would need a car to get to the nearest one. As it happens there was a discount store with a much better selection and at cheaper prices just a short walk down the road. So he has now not only lost out on potential sales and on holding his ‘captured audience' by offering a discount to create some loyalty, but he has now broken my trust in telling me a un-truth about what is available locally.

This is just a simple story to try and illustrate a point about trying to make it easy for your customers to buy - one of the 7-ways to grow your business is to sell more to your existing customers and this business man failed badly in my opinion.

Re: 10 Tips to Start an Online Business Re: 10 Tips to Start an Online Business - [quote="Anya101":1y6il6zm] 5. Make it very easy for people to order your products. The easier the order process, the more orders you will get. Make sure your payment pages are secured. If you accept payment online, it is [/quote:1y6il6zm] *This* is very good advice. I went to a site a couple of weeks ago to order a DVD, an independent movie, and instead of having Paypal, I had to jump through hoops to sign up for their payment system. It would have taken me more minutes than I cared to spend, so I just didn't bother!
Re: What is Email marketing? Re: What is Email marketing? - You can use something like constant contact to keep in touch with your clients or customers. I find it's a better tool for providing knowledge and staying connected, versus selling -- though a small ad at the bottom of your newsletter doesn't hurt. I wrote email marketing campaigns for companies in a past career life (before becoming a coach), and the response rates were much better when the newsletter was more like news and less like a sales pitch. For instance, write an article about a new study showing how healthy running is, and then offer a discount coupon for running shoes on the bottom of the email. People are bombarded with ads and they are usually boring. Make your email more interesting and you'll improve response rates, which are typically quite low for email. You can build an opt-in list by providing some value first. For instance, get a free (fill in the blank) when you subscribe to this newsletter. Make sure it's something fairly small and easy for you to deliver. Or attend events, offer a contest, etc. "win a ___ and get a free newsletter." That's a great way to capture a lot of emails. Also make sure your subscribers can easily opt out, as nothing is more annoying than being caught on someone's list who has made it impossible to opt out.
Re: Sales with no start up fees. Re: Sales with no start up fees. - What really attracts customers is sales, but I don't mean sale on everything. Just on a couple of products. For example you make different sales for 1 or 2 products that lasts for a week or two. Make sure to make a sale on something you need to get rid of. Having sales on different products every couple of weeks will attract many different customers if they see there's different variety. Of course this depends on how big the business is, but try something like that see if it works. Hope this sort of helps.
Re: Quote of the Day - "The only people witho Re: Quote of the Day - "The only people witho - Thanks for sharing this Evan, there are some very powerful quotes in there, I particularly like this one:- You are now at a crossroads. This is your opportunity to make the most important decision you will ever make. Forget your past. Who are you now? Who have you decided you really are now? Don't think about who you have been. Who are you now? Who have you decided to become? Make this decision consciously. Make it carefully. Make it powerfully. regards, Mal.
How to develop sales contacts? How to develop sales contacts? - Unfortunately starting off there isn’t a whole lot of easy tricks. But when you get those 2 interested prospects from sales calls and turn them into customers, you need to develop a referral system that gets 3-4 good prospects from each of them. That's the key to prospecting in sales, referrals from satisfied customers. Sometimes they'll give you the business without having to ask, but normally you'll have to pry a little and ask them who they know that could use your service or product.
