"The answer is simple"

...is always more effective a response than, "well, it's complicated."

One challenge analysts face is that their answers are often a lot more complicated than the simplistic (and wrong) fables that are peddled by those that would mislead and deceive. Same thing is true for many non-profits doing important work.

We're not going to have a lot of luck persuading masses of semi-interested people to seek out and embrace complicated answers, but we can take two steps to lead to better information exchange:

1. Take complicated overall answers and make them simple steps instead. Teach complexity over time, simply.

2. Teach a few people, the committed, to embrace the idea of complexity. That's what a great college education does, for example. That's what makes someone a statesman instead of a demagogue. Embracing complexity is a scarce trait, worth acquiring. But until your customers/voters/employees do, I think the first strategy is essential.

You can't sell complicated to someone who came to you to buy simple.

Why Answer The Phone?! Why Answer The Phone?! - I have a simple question... Why do you answer the phone? That is what an answering machine is for! I only answer the phone once the person starts talking to the answering machine and I ascertain that it is somebody I want to talk to. Yes, a lot of people hang up when they hear the answering machine - obviously their message was not important, so their hanging up suits me just fine.
Franchise model Franchise model - I think it's hard to come up with a general franchise model. Perhaps if we had more information on the company, industry, etc we could get some related data. There's no simple and easy answer!
Re: Selling my business.... Re: Selling my business.... - Sounds like you're in a tough situation. First things first, you really need to get some clear answers from the landlord. If they're not willing to extend your lease, then you're obviously in a pickle. I would do everything I could to negotiate a new lease. If landlord is balking at renewing the lease, find out why; Is it because they're looking to increase rents? Have you had problems with them? Are they planning to remodel? The landlords answer may not be what you are expecting and could possibly be a simple hurdle for you. I would try and have a face to face meeting as well... you'll learn more from their body language and pleading your case is going to have more impact. Without an extension on your lease I can't imagine how you're going to convince a buyer to take over your business. Re: Hello from Missouri Re: Hello from Missouri - [quote="MichaelH":gxmrz8rk] If anyone in those markets in a managerial or owner capacity would like to offer some simple numbers help I would be greatly appreciative. To be honest, I've actually posted an ad on my local Craigslist for help, and offer $5 PayPal to anyone willing to help... haven't had any results yet! [/quote:gxmrz8rk] Unfortunately, to get people to respond to anythign these days, you probably need to up the ante to at least $10. Managers to whom time is money aren't going to take even 5 minutes out of their day to answer questions and then just get $5 for it!
