The scientific method

In most interactions, we take a defensive posture. We try to defend the brand, or our turf or our job. The problem with defense is that it's static. The best way to get smarter, to embrace and to cause change and to triumph in times of market turmoil is to adopt the scientific method.

Ask yourself, "what do I believe that's wrong? How can I change the way I do things? What works? What doesn't?"

If you enter a conversation looking for something to test, measure and ultimately change, it's likely you'll find it. That change makes you more competitive, and you continue to cycle past your competitors. On the other hand, if you enter a conversation concerned about maintaining the status quo, it's likely that this is exactly what you're going to do.

Some people read business books looking for confirmation. I read them in search of disquiet. Confirmation is cheap, easy and ineffective. Restlessness and the scientific method, on the other hand, create a culture of testing and inquiry that can't help but push you forward.

Re: The Best Method for Online Marketing Re: The Best Method for Online Marketing - In my opinion, the best online marketing method is getting your website(s) to the top of the search engines through backlinks, quality content, and other SEO factors. However, you shouldn't use just one method. It's best to use several different techniques to ensure maximum results.
Re: Who Said Twitter Doesn't Work...? Re: Who Said Twitter Doesn't Work...? - Almost any marketing method CAN work for anyone depending on a number of factors. But I consider a good marketing method to be one that works for the majority of people all the time (as long as they are doing it correctly). An example of that would be article marketing. Twitter, on the other hand, is something that does not work well as a marketing method for the majority of people, even though so many people want it to work so badly that they try to convince everyone that it does. I've yet to hear from even one internet marketer I know that the traffic they get from Twitter converts into money in some way on a regular basis. Yeah it happens on occasion but nothing compared to several other marketing methods that work for years to come such as link building, SEO, article marketing, etc... I still need more convincing before I start drinking the Twitter kool-aid as a marketing method. I have nothing against Twitter. I do have two accounts there and I get on almost every day for a little bit. But it just isn't good for business... At least not business as far as most of us here are concerned, which is internet marketing, affiliate marketing, Adsense, and a few other similar monetization methods.
Six Tips for Taxpayers Starting a New Business Six Tips for Taxpayers Starting a New Business - Hi Guys, Just want to share tips for new business owners or for those who are going to start a new business: Here are the top six (6) things the IRS wants you to know if you plan on opening a new business this year. 1. First, you must decide what type of business entity you are going to establish. The type your business takes will determine which tax form you have to file. The most common types of business are the sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation and S corporation. 2. The type of business you operate determines what taxes you must pay and how you pay them. The four general types of business taxes are income tax, self-employment tax, employment tax and excise tax. 3. An Employer Identification Number is used to identify a business entity. Generally, businesses need an EIN. 4. Good records will help you ensure successful operation of your new business. You may choose any recordkeeping system suited to your business that clearly shows your income and expenses. Except in a few cases, the law does not require any special kind of records. However, the business you are in affects the type of records you need to keep for federal tax purposes. 5. Every business taxpayer must figure taxable income on an annual accounting period called a tax year. The calendar year and the fiscal year are the most common tax years used. 6. Each taxpayer must also use a consistent accounting method, which is a set of rules for determining when to report income and expenses. The most commonly used accounting methods are the cash method and an accrual method. Under the cash method, you generally report income in the tax year you receive it and deduct expenses in the tax year you pay them. Under an accrual method, you generally report income in the tax year you earn it and deduct expenses in the tax year you incur them.
