I’m Sending You on a Mission

Have you been participating in my "Mini Mission Mondays" on Facebook and Twitter? These are bite-sized outreach ideas that encourage you to interact with your business-critical network on a regular basis. Missions are the foundation of Relationship Masters Academy. This week's mission: Email a business-critical contact who has done something you admire and let them know.

Are you asking yourself whether this is really worth squeezing into your agenda, on what is no doubt a busy day?

Put yourself in the shoes of the recipient. Imagine how you would feel receiving an unprompted email that genuinely compliments your work. Imagine how it might transform your morning, making you just that much more willing to help others, that much more confident, that much more enthusiastic and engaged. (Extra credit: Ask the person if they'll coach you over a coffee on the thing you've noticed they're great at.)

Just that single email could make an entire team's day more productive. Imagine the effect you might have if you sent out such an email every single week.

Am I on to something here? Tell me on the blog - and report back when you've completed your mission.

Warmest,

Keith

Mission Mantra Mission Mantra - Why don't we call it a mission mantra? It depends on the business and how much emphasis they put on a Mission Statement or Mantra. Most of the business I've dealt with don't really care to much about a Mission Statement and only believe they need one because everyone else has one.

Do you believe in "Mantra" or "Mission Statem Do you believe in "Mantra" or "Mission Statem - In the Strategic Management course I'm currently taking, my group and I were supposed to come up with an improved mission statement for the organization we're analyzing or explain why the existing one doesn't need to be revised. However, business expert and author, Guy Kawasaki says "Forget mission statements; they're long, boring, and irrelevant. No one can ever remember them-much less implement them. Instead, take your meaning and make a mantra out of it. This will set your entire team on the right course" ("The Art of the Start" 3). Which do you use for your own businesses: Mantra, Mission Statements or neither? Thanks
Business lesssons from movies and TV Business lesssons from movies and TV - There's a new book out on doing business the Sopranos way... that's a TV show I never watched and I'm not interested in the book But sounds like a fun idea... Movies and TV do teach us things, even if only subliminally ... Toy Story is a good example of leadership styles between the "old way" Woody the wooden puppet and the "new way" Buzz the charismatic space ranger...(and one of my favorite movies...) Mission Impossible the tv series (not the abominable movies) would be great for plannng intricate operations and being prepared for anything...
And Commitment From Above... And Commitment From Above... - In my experience in larger organizations, there is often a conflict between the training the sharp-end employees receive and that of the more senior managers. That sometimes means the employees feel 'done to', and don't have the belief that their bosses will be on board too. That means they feel pretty disgruntled about the organization too and higher leaving/absence rates can be the more obvious symptoms, with deeper resistance, even sabotage being quite possible too. For example, sending a bunch of employees on a gung-ho selling skills programme (with a fancy lunch included), is incongruous with not getting their pay check right or management not building good relationships with their people. The key here is understanding what training will help employees deliver the needs of the business as well as ensurinjg it is of value and in context for the individuals too. If it's not a win-win (in the bigger picture of their workplace experience too), it's just not going to fly. Sending someone on a training courtse is not a 'fix-it' for all that ails an organization.
